Finding out what's running at startup is easy, just go to the Start Menu and then click Run. Type in msconfig and press Enter. In the window that appears, click on the tab labeled Startup. A list of programs will be shown, those items that have a check next to the entry do load at startup while the other items that have no check mark, do not.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com/
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Go to Start>Run type msconfig and go under the startup tab, there you can see all the programs that are activated during startup. You can then opt to disable them.

Yes this is possible.
One of the software that can help you detect the software loading at the start and stop them from loading if determined by you is "Autoruns". This is a very powerful Microsoft software which can be downloaded from the following link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb...
Another good software is "AnVir Task Manager". It has a freeware and a paid version. The freeware version will be enough for your requirement. Check it out on their website: http://www.anvir.com/
