It could be one, or a combination of many things that are introducing noise into your system. You are going to have to do some troubleshooting to figure out what is going on.

Some of the problems could be:

    - A ground loop. When you ground the different components of your system (head unit, amplifier, active crossover) to different parts of the chassis you may be creating ground loops. Make sure that you ground ALL the components at the same spot or different spots at the same potential (voltage).

    - Running signal wires on the same side of your car as power wires. If you have your amp or other components in the trunk, run the power wires on the side that your battery is, and the signal wires on the other side.

    - Long unshielded signal wires. If your signal wires (RCA) run for more than 3 feet, make sure to use shielded wires.

    - Poorly set gains in amplifiers. Make sure that you set the gains correctly. if you don't have a signal generator and an oscilloscope (usually pro equipment) you can used a voltmeter and a CD with a white noise track.

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck!

You are picking up electrical noise from the car itself - moving parts/friction and other magnetic waves cause the radio to pick up this disturbance and pass it along to the speakers - they make noise filters for your system that you can buy at any stereo shop and install yourself
