Does anyone know?
I have often wondered about this.....is there a way to test and see WHY a pregnancy is not achieved? What I mean is, can a Dr. tell if your egg is being fertilized and not implanting, or if the egg is just not being fertilized at all? I would think that this would be a huge issue when deciding what treatments to take.
If you are able to fertilize the egg, but it just won't implant, then wouldn't things like IUI and IVF be basically useless? On the other side of that, if your body is not able to fertilize the egg, wouldn't that allow people to move straight to IVF without going through months or years of trying other methods that will not work anyway?
It's just really frustrating that as medically advanced as we are today that this simple determination can't be made to help in the process. It would just make things so much clearer.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure nothing like this exists, but I wanted to ask.

Great question. I don't think there is a test that is specific to this and that is why I think fertility treatments are sort of trial and error and individual to the couple. My RE said that so much research and money is spent in finding ways to get couples pregnant but not on what actually is causing the high rates of infertility or the specific problems associated with infertility. I believe though through trial and error and multiple testing such as ultrasounds etc they can determine what will work for a person to succeed. I am also thinking that they can determine the lining of the uterus by doing interuterine ultrasounds during different time in your cycle. This can show the thickness, etc of the lining. I think they really can't pinpoint most peoples exact issue without doing some basic treatments to see how the person responds before moving into IVF. Of course they can do things like check for tubal blockages, etc that would keep an egg from being fertilized. By the way that test is pretty painful!!! So they can do a lot but it is not an exact science yet. Thanks for asking this question and I will be checking back for answers to see if someone knows of somthing I don't. Best wishes ttc!!!!!!!!

This is such a good question. I think about this all the time! I would imagine that they can do this with ultrasounds; after all, they can monitor the process of ovulation that way. I think IVF would be possible because they pretty much stick the embryos into the endometrium lining. But yes, in theory, IUI would not necessarily work.
But here's my own answer to this question -- if they knew this could be an issue, wouldn't they have addressed it by now? I mean, if they found that women with otherwise no sign of problems weren't implanting, they would have found a way around it. Just ruminating here .....

That's a really good incite. As far as I know it doesn't exist, most couples turn to IVF after trying everything because it is costly.
Doctors probably don't spent much time coming up with something like this because they would take money from the IVF and infertile couple field. Most doctors are in it to make money.

GREAT QUESTION!!
I would think that the only way to test something like this is to have a woman as a live-in case study and monitor her everyday...it would be a long process but hopefully it can help us that are TTC....and sometimes things just happen with no explination at all.

This is an excellent question....and I have wondered that exact same thing!!
I'm sorry I can't answer it, but I'd love to know if anyone knows the answer to this question.
I wonder if the Mayo clinic has done any of this?
Best of luck to you!
