A degree in children's literature?

I really want to obtain a Masters in Children's Literature. I'm about to graduate with my B.A. in Literature. I'm applying to various grad schools with programs specializing in children's literature. However, in case I don't get into one of those, I'm applying also to universities for a Masters in Literature. What do I suggest I do if I get accepted to a program in just Literature. I can make my thesis about anything in the field, right? So I'd be able to still tailor some of my studies to my interests? Or is it possible to study say, gender studies, then cover the construction of gender in picture books (my favorite topic) under this area?

Update:

I'm sorry. That should be "What do you suggest I do.."

My mistake.

Update 2:

I want to be a professor or work in children's book publishing.

advice i always got was to not get a masters in the same thing as undergrad. diversify, make yourself worth a little more.... and no offense but i dont see BA/MA in a literature/childrens literature as worth a whole lot...
