OK...after living in the middle of a colony for a few years, I got to know them a bit.

It is true that does happen, in some of the smaller groups. They are beginning to have some genetic issues because of the close breeding. I have first hand knowledge (I took a friend to participate, and had the chance myself) that they sometimes do this with outsiders because it is really a big problem and they are a bit desperate. The colony I was near had a big problem with six fingers. Turns out it is actually a dominant trait. But it isn't their religion to do this. They are just beginning to NEED to. They find it VERY distasteful.

They usually arrange marriages and trade women between the colonies to spread the genetics out more. This is more effective than the one shot deals.

"to breed?" That is rather coarse. Amish are supposed to marry within their religion. If they marry outside the religion, they tend to leave the Amish.

Oh, well, I had not heard this one. Sounds like a vicious rumor.

If they are that desparate, can't they find an alternative like in vitro or something? I know they aren't fond of technology and such, but it would seem like a more honorable choice to take the route of in vitro rather than hiring some guy to have sex with your wife :(
