Does anybody know about belle isle?

Update:

Well what I really wanted to know is does anybody know how much it cost to rent picnic shelters at belle isle? I can't seem to find the answer since the City of Detroit website is down. So if there are any city employees with the recreation department out there lurking, please let me know.

Belle Isle Park is the largest city park in the United States. It is larger than Central Park in New York City. And that's all I know about Belle Isle. Oh wait, I also know that they closed down the petting zoo and the aquarium so that Detroit could finance KK's lifestyle. Depending on who you ask, it may or may not have a nature center. Go check out www.fobi.org (Friends Of Belle Isle), but like many city-ran websites, much of the information is out dated. Good luck, and enjoy your visit!

I was married on Belle Isle this past summer. What I had to do to secure my space was contact the White House (office building). It's located near the Conservatory (right next to the green houses on the far end of the parking lot). You can call and ask to speak with either Earl or Toni at 313-852-4075. They will give you a list of prices, as well as rules of conduct, etc. I'm not sure how much picnic areas cost to rent, but we rented out the conservatory for $300, and the Casino for $550.00 (for 8 hours worth for my reception). Just a heads up however, while I love Belle Isle, and am so glad we were married there, make sure you arrive early to your space you rent, because you want to make sure it is clean and ready to go (because the casino was a wreck when we showed up to decorate, and took us an hour just to clean up from the previous venue there)

Best of luck, and like I said, give Earl or Toni a call, and they'll help ya out :)

Belle Isle is a good park to go to if you're having some type of picnic for a large family. But back then, you could always go over to places like the Giant Slide and have fun all day (they tore it down) if you want to. It's a big area with a lot of water if you want to take the kids down to see it. You can practically look across the water and see Canada.

    Various Belle Isle trivia:

-Named "Hog Island" by the French back in 17_ _ ... they put hogs and cattle out there to protect them from wovles ... some same they put the hogs out there to eat the snakes, sorry, that's just a tall tale.

-Named Belle, after the daughter of Lewis Cass, Isabelle.

-Housed a defensive Nike missle Base there in the late 1950's and part the 1960's. Nike wasn't a shoe company then. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory and nike missles where defensive missiles designed to shoot down Soviet aircraft and missles. There were several missile bases around Detroit: Grosse Isle, Southfield, Armada, Rochester ... yep true.

    - The west end (most folks call it South) isn't original. It was created to extend the island and to create more space for the Scott fountain ... who just so happened to be the biggest jerk around, but was really wealthy and set aside millions in his will to build the fountain and expand the island.

-My secretary was thrown off the bridge and died. Deletha Word. RIP

Belle Isle is too boring. Nothing but a bunch of drunk fools acting a fool. Go to the burbs and have fun.

I do. We go there often. I wish they didn't close the aquarium. I has so much potential. Did you know that it is designed by Frederick Law Olmsted? He designed NYC's Central Park. I love Belle Isle. ♥
