Hypothetical: In the next 60 seconds you must decide the fate of the Earth with a 3-way toggle switch.?
1.) Push the toggle up and a random 90% of humans die a painful death taking hours, 10% are not affected and live on to re-establish the species. You are part of the randomness - you may die or live.
2.) Push toggle down and 100% of humans die an immediate and PAINLESS death, human species is extinct.
3.) Do nothing and leave toggle in center position and 100% of humans die a painful death taking hours, human species is extinct. This would be a sado-masochistic choice, but is presented for those that might say they'd do nothing at all.
YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS TO DECIDE THE FATE OF HOMO SAPIENS ON EARTH.
If you chose #2 over #1, how much would the percentage of survivors have to increase for you to make that your choice? 30% ? 50% ? 90%?

If the question were personal, and I was given no other choice between certain painless death and a 10% chance for life after a painful struggle, I'd pick life. I'd apply the same logic to this question, and choose #1.
That would take about 10 seconds to decide. I'd use the other 50 seconds to get on Scottrade and buy all the stock in medicine/painkiller companies that I could afford.

I would choose Number 1, simply because numbers 2 and 3 are ensured to eliminate the entire human species. So what if I die as one of the 90%? it's for the greater cause. Anyways, you still have the 10% chance of surviving.
I would choose something that would at least leave the human race hanging by a thread instead at the end of a noose.
nice question! what would you choose?

wow, good question, I guess it depends on how pain full the death would be, and how many hours it would take. Sounds terrible to me though, and only 10 percent! I would probably take number 2 at that percentage because I wouldn't want to be in agony for any amount of time, let alone hours! Why the flip would you take number 3! Even if you were sado-masochistic, it would include you too! I would probably need at least 50 percent to consider number 1. Maybe even 90, because the thought of me, and billions of others suffering for hours, just for the sake of the other half getting to live our they're lives. Well, come to think of it, sounds like I'd need at least about 50 percent. I could ponder it for hours, but I'd say about 50 percent.
Sweet question though

Number 1. I actually think Number 2 is a more pleasing option, as for one thing I am guaranteed a painless death, and it would probably be better for the planet.
However, I would steel myself for a painful death and press Number 1, because I think it's the right thing to do, to give our species another chance. 10% is quite enough to repopulate the earth, even 1% would be enough, with just a little luck.
As I pressed the switch, I would be praying very hard I would not be in the 10% as they would have a very rough time ahead of them. I would probably pray for forgiveness as well!
I just think the harder and less attractive option is usually the right one.

2.
The 10% would not be able to survive if 90% suddenly died. So I would ultimately just be killing everyone slowly.
I would only pick option one if the survival rate was above 60%

I would choose number 3 option!
That would really send the Philosophers back to the drawing board.

#3 all or nothing baby....and i think humans deserve a painful death for all the suffering weve caused to ourselves and other species

Why "must" I? Who made me god? You? Him? Someone? Who made the toggle switch.
I would refuse to play god even if god made the switch and gave it to me. Let god kill me for not becoming him, for taking his responsibility. And Damn God for actually thinking I would do such a thing to my fellow humans.
God Damn You if you did it.

i'd close my eyes and spin around and click something.
Humans will all be dead someday anyway, so there is no point to worrying about it
