Just exactly who is entitled to disability benefit??

I know someone who has been on this for at least 20 years! Her kids are all grown up - she gets disability benefit but can walk down the shops, walk up six flights of stairs and sits watching t.v. or on the computer all day long... Surely, she could get a job on computers or sitting all day if need be - Who decides? I dont mind paying my taxes for people who deserve it but this is just laziness...

Update:

united kingdom - the government (WE THE TAXPAYERS) pay !!!!!

If she is getting disability benefits from a private insurer, then it is a matter of the contract that exists between your friend and that insurer.

Is she is getting disability benefits from the government, then the potential for unlimited benefits exists because our congress has said so.

Social Security is the biggest boondoggle this country has ever seen. It was never intended to be a cash cow for those who could not work or never saved anything in their life. If you feel there is waste, fraud or abuse in that this person may be colelcting benefits when she is not entitled, than it is up to you, the citizen and taxpayer whose money she is stealing, to report it to the proper authorities.

In order to claim Disability Living Allowance you must be able to prove that you have a disability. The application process is lengthy and your claim needs to be signed by at least two professionals involved in your care. Also, you must attend regular medical assessments. Some people will always slip through the net I suppose, for example, a bad back is difficult for doctors to disprove. But you must remember that not all disabilities are visible and that some diseases can take years, decades even, to really take hold. My sister in law still has to attend assessments even though she was born without an arm and has had type 1 Diabetes for 20 years and struggles to walk anywhere.

I don't know of the circumstances of the person to whom you refer and it may be that she is receiving benefits to which she is not entitled. However, one should bear in mind that disabilities are not necessarily of a physical nature and do not necessarily render one permanently incapable.

For example, those with MS may seem to be in perfect health on a good day and then find themselves in great pain and virtually paralysed for weeks at a time. A similar scenario can be true for those with serious mental illness too. I have a friend who can seem perfectly well: she can be bright, witty, able to go out to the shops and take care of herself. Yet she spends most of her time unable to leave the house, pick up the phone or even wash and dress herself.

You may wonder why these people don't just work when they are well enough to. In fact, many would relish the chance to do so. Unfortunately though, disability benefits (at least in most countries I know of) are simply not flexible enough for claimants to do this. If one cannot guarantee being well for a prolonged period of time then it is simply impractical to stop receiving benefit. Also, a great many employers would not touch someone with that sort of sick record with the proverbial barge pole!

Unless you actually know the extent of her disability, you really can't judge whether or not she's entitled to the benefit.

It may be that her disability is one that outwardly cannot be noticed.

Claiming Disability is not an easy process, and there are many forms and regulations, and medicals to go through, but in saying that, I do realise that there are some that are 'abusing the system' and that, like you makes me mad... but you can report this abuse, if you have evidence.

They don't just hand out disability benefit on request. She has to be taking medication for a certain length of time (in years) re: her infirmity/s. She will have had to satisfy a board of medical referees periodically ( in months) in order to stay in benefit. You don't know what medical / psychological problems that woman is suffering from !?!.=Progressive Degenerative Disorders.

Life is hard enough at the best of times.

It's probably because of a "back" or "foot" problem that will never go away...maybe because something didn't heal right so it gives her little discomfort.

I'm sure there was an injury at one point but now it seems your friend/neighbor is taking advantage of the benefits intended for people who truly are hurt and in need of financial assistance because they can't work, because they are injured.

You can report her if you feel it is necessary...just make sure the report is made anonymously.

I have a neighbour who is doing exactly the same, he's capable of doing all kinds of work in the house and his Son's house, DIY and such likes, cuts high hedges and can climb ladders, but he has a bad back!!!. He has been reported numerous times by other neighbours, but nothing happens. How do they con the system I wonder?.

Just know that anyone can con it, My pride wont allow me but I have been told by a Friend to change to an immigrant doctor as he has. Is it surprising . (just waiting to get censored by the way)

I agree with another respondee. If you have evidence that this person is getting your money and mine under false pretences, it is your duty to report it. You can do so anonymously on the website shown below, and they have a duty to investigate it.
