Will my laptop be faster with a 200GB hard drive, rather than a 80GB?
My hard drive recently went out on me. Thankfully I had my laptop hooked up to an external hard drive and I did not lose any pictures or documents. I took the laptop to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. They diagnosed it as a bad hard drive and replaced the old 80GB with a 200GB. They are now re-installing the OS - I should have it back tomorrow.
My question is how exactly will my laptop be different? I know it won't have any of the programs I have installed or downloaded. I plan on spending some time reinstalling everything. With the bigger sized hard drive, will it run faster?
Thanks for your help!

There will be no difference in your computer's performance assuming the speeds of the hard drives are the same.
Your computer needs a decent amount of memory, and a fast processor, but the different hard drives aren't going to make a noticeable difference. There are a few things you can do to help keep your computer pretty much running at the same speed it's going to be running at when you get it back though.
You can make sure that non-essential programs do not start on startup by going to start menu, clicking "run" and typing: msconfig. Then choose "selective startup" and you can eliminate unwanted processes and programs from starting.
Before doing this though, it's a great idea to create a restore point. Let me know if you need help with this feature, feel free to email me.
There's something else you can do as well. Download CCleaner. It's free, and it works really well. Here's a link to download, and there are reviews there too.

Simple Answer: No, your new computer will not be *noticeably* faster.
Your computer's ability to pull information off of your hard drive is limited first by the spin speed of the drive (Probably 5400 or 7200 RPM if the drive is from Best Buy) and secondly by the interface your drive uses (IDE/PATA or SATA).
The only way your laptop will be quicker is if your previous drive was a 5400 (or slower) RPM and your new drive is rated for higher. Even so, the jump isn't a dramatic increase. You'd get much more bang for your buck by adding more RAM.

it depends on what laptop you are buying now say if the laptop was about £400/500 then that is what you would expect from a place like pcworld, but if you were spending £600+ then look for 160gb, now do not make it a prime aim for a bigger hard drive as they are cheap to replace on most laptops. Now if you have the option like of dell and you are deciding think about what you do, say if you are like me, quite a few pictures, a few movies, mainly surf net and do work. 80gb is more than enough. But if you want to do video/picture editing and play loads of games then get a bigger hard drive.

In short, no. If you want to see a noticeable different in performance, add more RAM. Upgrading your RAM is usually what will make the biggest difference in processing speed. The only thing that will be different is you will have more hard drive space. Although, if your old drive was, say, a 5400-rpm and your new one is a 7200-rpm, there will be a slight decrease in the amount of time it takes to find a file. Nothing really noticeable, though.

Your hard drive seek time maybe slightly improved, but in any case your RAM is the main part which makes a huge difference. More the RAM, more faster your system is going to be. Nowadays having a 2GB RAM makes a huge difference in running any app's or booting your system.

ur hard drive has nothing to do with your speed..
it may get a little slower if its full and the files are busted up.
meaning you havnt defraged in a while
getting a bigger hard drive wont really inprove your speed
the ram will help some if you get more..
the speed is from the processor on the motherboard

Harddrives have speeds yes...Typically in laptops its 5400rpm or 7200rpm..Most basic laptops have 5400rpm drives and since your getting a 200gb drive I am betings its going to be 5400rpm as well.. Your just going to get more space thats all but great job backing up! Most people don't do that.

get more RAM and make sure its the best RAM in the world get like 2-5 Gigs of it and keep the hard drive

depending on the age of both the laptop and the hard drive, the result may vary. but i think it's safe to say it will perform just fine ;)

it depends on the seek time and rpm of the new drive, most likely it will be as fast if not faster
