POLL: How much money is too much money to keep your pet alive?

I don't know the particulars, but there may be another course. Don't feel cheap. $350/week is more than most people can afford... it's certainly more than I can afford.

Unfortunately for people who consider their companion animal a member of their family don't have the same options as their human members. With our human family members there are many treatment and payment options that just aren't available when it comes to our animals.

One option we do have is a second opinion. Don't feel obligated in any way to your vet, or he/she has all the answers. Sometimes, we give too much authority to the doctor, but they make mistakes just like the rest of us.

You know in your heart how much you love Mugsy. Don't let this situation, or what anyone else says be your measuring stick. With a little guidance and thought, you'll make the right decisions for Mugsy, you and your family.

It depends upon the pets quality of life once your start spending the $350 on them. It's not the money for me, (although I'd HAVE to take that into consideration) it's their quality of life. If I'm keeping them around because I love them but have to keep giving them treatments that may be scary or make them super nervous or don't make them better all the way, then what quality do they have in their life? If it was a baby, I have health insurance to cover it. I don't with the cats. I've gone through situations before where the animals quality of life was low and so I helped the animal cross the rainbow bridge. I've spent money on young animals with a chance for a quality life before and would do it again. Two pulled through and were fine and the other, the poor sweet little bird, I had to put her down, her quality of life dropped and she basically asked for me to help. She died in my hand. I loved that bird and she taught me a lot about how to handle bird diseases and ailements. She was never right from the start and she costed a lot of money in vet bills. Actually, I wish we could think about the quality of life for humans instead of keeping them alive, braindead on a feeding tube. I'm so glad Grandma had a "do not resesitate" order. The Lord said, come on, it's your turn and she finally went. Her quality of life was down and it wasn't right to keep her alive to torture her. Plus, that's what she wanted. I admire her SO much. I give that same piece of mind to my animals if need be. I had to euthanize a fish once. There has been some discussion about how to euthanize a pet walking stick bug as well. My purebred cat has a slight heart murmur. he doesn't cost money now, but I would spend money on him until his quality of life was compromised and then I'd help him cross over the rainbow brige. I agree with your decision however and my condolences go out to you.

Sometimes not having a choice makes a hard situation a little easier. Having 2 bad choices is like having no choice at all.

Are you really sure you have no other options, would it be that total for the rest of his life or is there hope that he can get well again...

Don't give up hope right away, see another vet, do something but don't give up yet sweetie.

Cr@p, I'm so sorry - I volunteer at a local animal shelter and the bills for just one animal can be a stretch for an organisation let alone an individual. I havn't stalked you enough ...yet...to know which country you live in, but many countries have organisations to help people pay for medical help for their companion animals. I've posted a link to some.. You just may be able to get some help with the bills. I hope against hope that you have some success with this. Love to both yourself, and your sick friend.

My cat died 2 years ago and I am still paying off the vet bills. I still feel a little guilty because it got to a point where money was an issue. He was 17,one vet wanted to operate, but another didn't think he would survive the operation, and I let him talk me into putting him down.

that is alot of money,it just cost me $350 for my dog last Thursday and i just got a call now to bring him back tomorrow for involved xrays and testing,so its cost me an arm and a leg already and its going to get worse after tomorrow,i have a payment plan at the moment and il do anything to help my dog-i have 5,so i know its hard,id like to know wots wrong with yours!Its a heartbreaking decision to have to make,it sux its so expensive..all the best :)xox

As much as I love and adore my pets, they are not comparable to a child...

If the care for my animals was taking food away from my child..I would have to make the hard choices. Growing up often sucks.

Does your dog have diabetes's by chance ....?

My cat was just diagnosed and it is very PRICEY to treat ... but even more so for a dog, since a dog requires more insulin. I was shocked at the cost, too....

But in my heart, I could NOT put my cat to sleep.

I dont know...its pretty tough...if you are not a pet owner, do not answer this question because you would not understand. I love my dog!!! I hope she never gets sick. I dont have much money...but I probably would do all I can to keep her healthy

If you're being serious......I'm so very sorry. Decisions like that are always hard, but clear from the get go.

If youre NOT, I don't think I cost that much per week.
