Truck drove then wouldn't crank after 2 hours. Is fuel pump bad?
My truck has a faulty fuel sending unit so my gas gauge doesn't read properly and it has shut off on me 3 times because i ran out. I drove today for maybe 40 miles if that and i put $30 in gas so that's plenty. Well i drove to my girlfriend's friend's house and when we went to leave about 2 hours later i got in to start the truck and it turned over just fine and it didn't seem like the battery had any problem running the starter but the truck would not crank. I couldn't hear the fuel pump priming either. I don't know if i just couldn't hear it or if it just wasn't priming. It is a 1991 Chevrolet s10 pickup with a 4.3 v6 motor and manual transmission. I replaced the spark plugs and wires and they have less than 1,000 miles on them. The battery looks relatively new and in good shape but i'm thinking it's the fuel pump. What do you think?
My starter turns over fine. I don't have a problem with the battery being weak or anything. When i turn the key it sounds just as strong as normal except it won't crank up. I normally hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds when i turn the key half-way but i don't hear anything. Like i said it's run out of gas 2-3 times so i'm thinking that the fuel pump got damaged and it finally gave out after driving lately. My fuel filter was replaced by the previous owner before i bought the truck. And yes i have double checked to make sure he was telling the truck and i can tell the filter is new just by looking at it.
It's still at my ex girlfriend's house right now until i can get my uncle to tow it home on his trailer but i'll test the pump when i get it home. I would have shined a light at the throttle body but it was too dark to see if any fuel came out when cranking the truck. But i'm 99% positive it's the pump but i wanted some more opinions first.

Why dont you hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and see what the actual readings are key on engine off and key on engine on or cracking, and compare it the the specs? Ps, dont just stick a finger or something in the valve to see if you have fuel, that is the improper way to check fuel pressure, that is the hillbilly, shade tree, and incorrect way, call a dealership and ask them if thats how you test fuel pressure, they will get a good laugh.

It's most likely the fuel pump. If it turned over okay and it just doesn't sound bad, then your not getting any fuel. Most likely, running out of gas frequently has burned it up. Check the fuel filter first before you go to the trouble with the fuel pump. Good luck!

There is a valve on the fuel rail that looks like a tire valve stem,,, turn the key on and press the center pin of this valve gas should shoot out at least 2 inches.... If there isn't any fuel then your fuel pump is probably bad... Check your fuel pump relay before you change the pump Good Luck

You have a strainer in the tank not the filter. And the filter is not the problem, if it runs good when it does start then the filter is not the problem. It would be either the prime is going out of the fuel system or the cold start sensor in the engine block is not working. Look for the Schroeder valve in the fuel line and before you try to start remove the plastic cap and push the valve in, you should get squirted with fuel if not you have found the problem.

if it wont crank you ran the battery dead cranking on it . 1.charge the battery 2. have someone crank the truck over 3. hit the bottom of the tank and it should start then yes it is the fuel pump

have to remember fuel pumps generate heat and the fuel in the tank keeps them cool. running low on fuel or running out will shorten the fuel pump life

if its not cranking its probably not the fuel pump i would look to see if you are getting power to the starter to start then go from there

I would replace the pump. I have found on many jeep and doges that the computer will also cause the same problems but you have a chevy so I;m not sure
