Air sucked in through oil cap?
I have a BMW E36 316i. When the engine is warm there is a loud squealing noise from the engine bay. If I remove the oil cap or pull out the dip stick there is a massive contant rush of air being sucked into the engine and the squeal stops. The diapham is also split! Any ideas what it could be?

It's a crankcase ventilation problem. There is always a connection between the inlet manifold and the engine crankcase this is controled by a valve and yours isn't being controlled, hence the sucking and yes this diaphragm may be the problem.

you should have negative crankcase pressure ie the oil fumes are sucked in to engine to be burnt of, there is usually a restricter on the pipe connecting to your air intake manifold.

Replace your Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve and make sure the oil cap is air tight.
