Biggest Common Snapping Turtle?
My friend and I have been catching turtles for over 15 years. Most of them have been Common Snapping Turtles in excess of hundreds. Last year in Barrington RI, we caught this one. We have caught big ones before but none this big. It was the first Snapping turtle that actually frightened me. I'm 6'3 and wear size 11 shoe, check out the size of it's front foot in comparison to mine. So, anyone else have any cool pictures of monster Snappers? No fib tales either, " It was the size of a car door". I know that is b.s. The world record for A common is somewhere around I believe 75 pounds with a carapace of 20-22 inches. This one is around 50lbs if not a little more (it look both of us to wrestle it out of the water......thats a first).
Check out the picture.

That's a monster! I've caught some huge commons, but yours is much bigger than any I've caught. I've seen some big ones in the wild here in Texas, as well as some huge softshells. Very cool picture!

Trying to hand feed a snapping turtle is a great way to lose a finger, or a hand depending on the size of the turtle. A friend of mine had a 1/4 acre pond in his back yard. When they were kids, he and his sister released two baby commons into the pond. They turned out to be male and female, and it wasn't long before the pond was overrun with snapping turtles. I saw the original pair when they were about 20 years old (very, very young for snapping turtles--Jack Hanna has one that is believed to have belonged to Thomas Jefferson's children). Both had carapace lengths well over 30", and the heads were the size of soccer balls. Keep that in mind when thinking about housing for a snapping turtle.

Thats a nice looking snapper. I've rescued quite a few common snappers from the middle of the roads in my area. I live out in Pa in the country where there are tons of ponds and they go cross the roads for mating. I don't have a picture didnt have a camera at the time but this aint no bs. And one time 5 years ago we had a pretty big drought and some ponds in the area were going dry. So me and a buddy of mine were going down a main road and we saw this huge snapper. He was scared cause he has never seen one before. But I was use to it, but it took us a while to get it off the road we had traffic and all stopped. I put it in the back of my good old 86 mustang and took it to a pond by my house and released it. The carapace was about 19-20 inches and was about 50-55lbs it was the biggest snapper I had ever seen and when I took it back to the house my dad was shocked of how big it was as well. Do you catch for fun or soup. Cause if ya catch for fun good luck if ya catch for food hope ya get a good bite taken out of ya haha. But if its for fun we should catch up with each other and catch some snappers.

Beautiful. I suspect that it is as heavy as you say. The record, incidently, is 86 lbs but that one was fattened for the table. I think that 22 inches of carapace is a bit short for the record, quite a bit short.

Mine wasn't very big. He was tiny. I rescued him when my grandma wanted to stomp him. when i got him his shell was the size of a quarter. I kept him in a tank, fed him pellets and scrubbed him with a toothbrush. He actually liked it. Hed stretch his neck out so i could get the edge of his shell. He never tried to bite me. I had to give him to the local zoo after he outgrew his tank. He lives in a fenced in pond now, and i think he's happier. His shell is about 8 in wide now, so he's still little.
