It's the first stage of non rem sleep (a brain wave pattern like theta, delta, etc). It's when you start to feel drowsy. Hypnagogic hallucinations sometimes occur during this stage (that may be where the "visual" piece comes into play).

The visual n1 is a component in the mind...I think...that is apart of the discrimination process...
