If you swallow a neodymium magnet...?

... will your blood be attracted to it? Blood contains hemoglobin, a molecule, which contains iron. Iron is attracted to magnets.

The real problem with swallowing any magnets is that they can cause bowel obstructions. Probably one would pass through ok, but when kids swallow more than one then they can pull sections of the intestines together. More than once I read about surgery on kids who swallowed magnets. And if you swallow a magnet and some magnetic material you have the same problem.

As for the blood and hemoglobin part of the question, the body sequesters iron. While there may be some small local loss of iron from a magnet, the molecular holds on iron would be too strong. If that were not true you could not hold strong magnets in your hand without tissue damage or get an MRI. It does not really matter if the magnet is inside your body or outside does it? I mean, you could hold a strong magnet up to your heart and be just fine, right. Unless you had a pacemaker, but now you are screwing up the machine.

Here's a simple experiment to find out.

Place the magnet on your fingertip. If your finger changes color even a little, with a redder tint than the other fingers, then yes, blood can be attracted.

You don't need to swallow the silly thing!

not likly caue the mass of a blood cell is to low in irno to matter. in fact farmers use whats called cow magnets they are 3 to 4 inches long about a half inch round. they put them down in the cows stomach because when a cow grazes it picks up nails and bits of metal that can damage theire bowls. so the magnet collect them in the stomachtill they disolve. most cows dont go much past three to five years old before they are proscesed. i am not sure how much the magnets are used with grain feed cattle but it was used alot in the grazing ones.

No. However if you swallow two neodymium magnets, you have a big problem that will require surgery to fix.

no, just because blood contains iron does not mean it is reactive- usually blood is saturated with oxygen which diminished any magnetic properties

no, you'll be fine as long as that was the only magnet!

see your GP and they'll give you an x-ray to see if the magnet is stuck somewhere.

it will most probebly come out your waste lol
