You shouldn't have too much trouble, especially in and around San Francisco and the surrounding areas like Berkeley.

If you're 30 minutes north of SF, I'd say you are lucky. SF has a rather large gay community, and I'm sure you will find the time to visit it. The Gay and Lesbian Centre will be able to help you find some groups and point you in the direction of bars and coffee houses. There might even be some in the town you will be living in.
