Physics question involving tension. (with picture!)?
This is a question straight from my physics exam today:
A uniform rod, AB, is 1.2 m long and weighs 16 N. It is suspended by strings AC and BD as shown. A block, P, weighing 96 N is attached at E, 0.30 m from A. The magnitude of the tension force in the string BD is:

Now, I am quite sure it involves torque, but I honestly dont know how i should use it in order to find the tension in BD

It involves moments which are used in rigid body mechanics.
Basically the answer is
.5*16+.3/1.2*96=32N. Note the tension on the other string
is .5*16+.9/1.2*96=80N
The two strings are together supporting 112N which is the
sum of the 96 and 16. Placement of the 96 N dertermines the distribution of weight
