MLA format for a collection of plays?
How should I cite one individual play within a collection of plays in MLA format? Let's say I have a book entitled Three Shakespeare Tragedies and it includes Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear. I want to cite Hamlet only in my paper. Normally, Hamlet would be italicized as a full-length literary work; however, as part of a larger book, in this specific publication, it would be in quotes. I'm not sure how to put it on my works cited page.
Shakespeare, William. Hamlet (underlined). Three Shakespeare Tragedies (underlined). Ed. Humphrey Higglesworth. New York: Signet, 1996.
That seems wrong. This predicament is not mentioned in my MLA book or on their website. Any ideas?

I would cite it as a work in an anthology, which according to my MLA Guidelines (from The Bedford Handbook 6th ed.) is:
Author Last Name, First Name. "Title of Work (Play)." Title of Book (underlined). Ed. Editor First Name Last Name. Publishing City: Publisher. Year. First Page-Last Page.
So, the same as yours with Hamlet in quotes instead. As a rule, a play's title is always in quotation marks unless it is published as a book on its own with that title.
Good luck!

MLA (Modern Language Association) is a format or the type of structure that you use to write a paper. There are many different formats that you can use to write and organize a paper. I personally prefer APA. However to answer your question. . . Whatever you are reading or plan to write, when you look up the information written( textual), it will be cited using MLA style of writing. Citing is when you used the exact words of a speaker. You must give them credit for their writing by citing them as a source in your paper. Also, your works cited page is also called your reference or bibliography page. If you must write your paper using MLA style, you may want to purchase of check out the book. It does change, I believe they are in the fourth edition now. Ex. of MLA citation of a book used as a resource (your works cited or reference page) Parson, Alexander. Amazing Spiders. New York: Knopf, 1990. Author's Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Publication Date. Good luck!

Hmm..interesting, I'm not really sure. Try looking around http://citationmachine.net/ . It will site it for you, but try looking around for citing that specific format first :)
