We Chinese people are putting a lot on the Olympics, by putting the best foot forward and trying to make it the best games ever. The whole world will take notice that China is not a evil country and the Chinese are good and friendly people.
Media coverage plays a big part as well. If all you hear of China is negative information, you will form a negative opinion on both China and Chinese people.
It's not just the news though, understanding between cultures is achieve by showing others the good side of your culture using things such as art, history, music and food. A fan of Yao Ming, a Kung Fu movie nut, a lover of Chinese art, or just someone who enjoys Chinese food is less likely to be so critical of China and Chinese people. This makes the 2008 Olympics so important because it is a good opportunity for us to promote peace and mutual understanding.
I wise to share an article from a Western newspaper about why boycotting the Beijing Olympics will do no good for China, or anyone else:

China was not long ago my favourite place on this planet since my first trip there in 1984, and I was planning a trip to Beijing this summer and a move to Dalian with my family in the fall. Not anymore...It's off my list now at least for some time. Sad because most of my friends are there.

The venues and the building is top notch. Bird's nest. Watercube is one of the best building I've ever see.
Environment: poor but still manageable.
Safety and security: Very good
Transportation: Fair
Accommodation: Good

I think it's great !
Very excited about it. and can't wait to see the starting and the ending. Can't wait to see how many medals the Chinese will get. (not being sarcastic). I love to see how smart the Chinese are, not on the sport, but on the whole organizing of the Olympic, the technology and the openness.

I am quite nervous for China right now, with the torch tour going as badly as it is, I am wondering what are some of the athletes going to do during the games to protest, : (

Well as there not started, I can't say.
Odds are it will be good but it will be a policial nightmare for them if things go bad.

I like it very much! I think it will be a success even with some self righteous extremist trying to ruin it.
