Clean it four times in a month or once a week. The build up of urine in the cage is not good for you or your pet. And cleaning it too much is not a bad thing either. A clean house makes for a healthier pet!

    Good Luck~

Don’t forget your housekeeping duties! Remove droppings, uneaten food and soiled bedding every day. Every week, remove and replace all the bedding, and scrub the bottom of the cage with hot, soapy water or Simlple Green. If you litter train ahamster, you can remove all the smelly stuff everyday without looking for it. You can never clean a cage to much. If you only cleaned it once a month, the hamster would become sick and die. The more you clean it, the better and healthier your hamster will be.

At least once a week, or four times a month for one, preferably, and more if there is more than one hamster. You really shouldn't wait until the cage smells, because that just means a lot of waste and ammonia (poisonous to your hammy, and doesn't smell too good either) has accumulated in the cage already (like waiting for the hunger pangs until you eat). If you're worried that the hamster will get distressed, add a small amount of the previous litter so his or her scent is still there.

Remember to wash the cage, water bottle, and dishes too. It's also a good idea to replace some of the worn out parts, like chewed cardboard tubes.

Generally, you should clean the cage once a week. However, this varies from hamster to hamster. If after a week you don't notice a smell to the cage, wait until it starts to smell a bit. Then, figure out how long it was since you last cleaned the cage, and from then on, start cleaning the cage once it starts smelling a bit.
