How do I tip in a situation like this?

Hi all, I need help!! I went to the salon the other day to get my hair cut. One girl washed my hair, then my stylist cut my hair and he asked me if he could let another girl blow dry it, because she was learning, and he would supervise it. I said yes, of course, and she did a good job. The problem was when I had to tip. I didn't want to offend anyone, so I left 10$ for my stylist, and $5 for each girl, but that was in total a lot of money, and I don't know if it was right (I'm not used to tipping because I come from Italy and there things work differently).

What would you have done in my place? What should I do next time?

well , u know , since the trainee was actually practicing her skills on u , you are the one who should be getting tipped-if anyone ever needs to get tipped . .

so next time, dont tip anything more than $ 5 , ,

I would have given the girl $10 and the stylist nothing, since he didn't do anything. They would have settled it among themselves. $5 was too much for the shampoo, maybe half that amount. I'm from a tipping town. Las Vegas. I always tip well (overtip) if I like the service rendered. If I don't, I leave a dime, just to make sure they get the point. Have a nice day.

You were a very generous tipper, and I'm sure you'll be able to get an appointment any time you want one! I probably would have just tipped my stylist - but it was nice of you!

At my salon, you pay a cashier (I think this is pretty common), and I just usually tell her to add the tip to my total bill, and allow the cashier to settle it. That way, it makes it less awkward for every one.

  • I would just tip the stylist. Washing and drying hair isn't really that major.

I would just tip the stylist...

I would imagine they do some "tip-sharing" where the stylist will take out a certain percentage of their tips received and divide it among the hair washers and driers.

I always tip at the cash and they can fight it out. Many businesses will pool tips anyway, and give everyone a cut. Or seniors may 'tipout' the juniors at the end of the day, in some cases.

With past experiences, leave the tip when you pay the bill. Some salons split evenly with their shampoo girls, others don't allow for them to recieve any sort of tip at all!

You just tip your stylist next time.

Maybe you could just leave the tip when you pay the bill and let them figure it out.
