What can I do about persistent night time cough in my 10 month old?

She was diagnosed with croup last week and the cough was getting better the cold is nearly gone but it seems like at night its getting worse. The dr said the childrens cough meds dont work and to use the steam of the shower, humidifier etc but shes been wakin gherself up constantly the past few days. I used vicks on her feet and chest/back everything Ive heard. What else can I do shes not too congested its sounds kind of hacky now? Otherwise shes fine, eats fine and plays during the day.

Update:

the dr said the cough can last another wk or 2 even its been 1 week so far.

A dry cough needs cool mist humdifier...not steam anymore. The air conditioner in spring/summer and heater in fall/winter dry out the air in our homes which drys noses and throats and further agitate a cough. Either get a cool mist humidifier to add moisture back in the air, or crack her window at night....I swear this was the only thing that helped my son's dry, hacky cough. A dry cough means there is no mucus that her body is trying to get rid of...it's just throat agitation from laying down and dry air. Good luck!

It sounds like you are doing everything right. I would put a pillow UNDER the head of her mattress to elevate her at night.

You mentioned you have been using Vicks - I have also found a wall plug-in made by Pedicare (I think it is called something like "simple vapors.) You plug it in an outlet in her room and it fills the room with Vicks-like vapors. It has seemed to settle my daughter's coughs when she has gotten sick.

Be sure to visit the doc for a re-check to make sure she is recovering well.

try raising the head of her crib a bit. This can help drainage run down at night and lead to less coughing. Has she seen the dr for a recheck recently? If the coughing isn't better in a few days they usually want to see them again.
