How can I increase the towing capacity of a 2005 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?
I have a early edition 2005 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. It has a dealer installed after market hitch (class 3). I just found out that the maximum towing capacity is only 3,500 lbs. I have a travel trailer for camping that weighs 3,200lbs empty. I imagine I will be towing close to 3,500lbs when geared up. The camping trips will be about 5 times per year and the drives will be about 1-2 hours each way.
Will a transmission cooler allow for an increased towing capacity? Will I be able to tow the maximum recommended capacity safely without damaging my transmission?
I also have an anti-sway bar with weight distribution if that matters.
Thanks for any help I can get.
Thanks. My trailer also has electric brakes if that helps in any way.

You can't increase the factory rated towing capacity. That number is based on several things, including the strength of the frame, stopping ability of the brakes, the gear ratios of the axles, and the power of the engine. If your hitch is rated at 3500 lbs, that means you should limit hitch weight to around 350 lbs tongue weight.
If you are careful how you pack the trailer and drive sensibly, you can probably get by with towing your 3500lb trailer, but don't take any chances and keep your speed down.
