Why don't people like designer dogs like the Morkie?

I see a lot of people don't like designer dogs like our Morkie, why is that?We went to the dog shelters and they had no small non-shedding dogs so we seen an ad in the paper for a Morkie and one look and we bought her.

Update:

jbeezz...I never said the Morkie was a breed of dog.

As for shedding,we can brush her for an hour and get no fur from her

What's the difference if you buy a pure bred dog for $300 or a Morkie for $300.Like I said the shelter had no small dog and I did give them a $50 donation because my heart goes out to those animals.

Update 2:

Seems like people don't understand that pure bred dogs can end up in the shelters too.

you would have to agree with alot of the other answer's, the word designer dog can be just another scam by breeders in alot of case's. HOWEVER, for all those snob's going on and on about their fantastic pure breeds, alot of these breeds have been created over the years by cross breeding to get the required look, skill( for working dogs) and temperament. so fair play to you for rescuing a dog, and no matter if you call him a mut or a designer dog, i hope she brings you alot of happiness

Designer dogs are just a breeders way out of charging people a fortune for a mutt. Sure they're cute, but then again all puppies are cute. I'm sure you paid at least a couple hundred dollars for your morkie too, right? People looking for a "hypo-allergenic" dog should really consider not getting a dog because there is no such thing. Sure there are dogs that shed less than others, but if you're allergic its because of the dog's dander.

All in all a designer dog is a mutt. Period. That will never change and charging people a fortune for a mutt will always be ridiculous.

There is no such breed as a morkie so you paid a lot of money to some back yard breeder for, not a designer dog, but a mutt!! Someone fooled you.

Mutts are actually the best and healthiest dogs but you could have saved a life by adopting a dog from your local shelter or Humane Society.

OKAY I dont have a problem with designer breeds just the breeders. Now I also have a problem with the next statements.

    1. It is a registered new breed. with ckc.

    2. it is a rare designer breed and will one day be a member of the AKC.

    3. price well we are asking $$$$.$$. Cause you know it is a "rare breed" and registered with ckc.

    4. Dont you just love the name... I think schoodle is awesome.

cockapoo, doberdoodle, goldendoodle, labradoodle, morkie, corkie, snorkie. ect....

    5. it is a new hybrid dog..

    6. I have the right to breed my dogs (even though I only do it for money not to better the breed)

    7. Everyone thinks they are sooo cute.

    8. Oh and my favorite con.. it is a new HYPO Allergenic dog!

    9. The designer breeds have less genetic problems then purebreds... myth. actually a responsible purebred breeder will actually test their dogs for genetic diseases. And breed for better genetics and a better dog.

    YEAH!!!

buy a mutt when shelter dogs are dieing and rescues are flooded with unwanted designer dogs... YEAH!

ok I love the dogs, I dont like the breeders. or the price they probably got out of you.

I know my breeds can end up in the shelters. That is why I rescue. The shelters always have small breed dogs come in. you just need to wait.

The problem with buying a designer dog for $300. compared to a pure bred for $300. is that the purebred is bred for a reason by a responsible breeder. The mutt, is breed for money and money alone.

Designer dogs are effectively mutts I don't think anyone on here hates mutts.

What people don't like is uninformed breeders taking two different breeds to produce a "labra doodle min poo Mary had a little lamb acock a doodle doo" or whatever.

These mutts are then passed off as "designer breeds" at inflated prices.

And don't start me on mini micro teacups. Very expensive runts.

I have had mutts (usually rescued) for years aswell as pure breeds - and I love and have loved them all

EDIT: OK OK Point taken - you never said she was a breed. But you did say she is a designer dog which is covering up for the fact that she is a mixed breed and making it sound better. Which is exactly what BYBs do.

Designer dogs don't exist, they are over priced mutts and the whole name thing has gotten ridiculous.

Here is what I said in another response for a similar question:

Reasons for: None. When a dog is in the pound/kill shelter, then by all means ADOPT the mutt, but intentionally breeding overpriced, mostly sick mutts is evil.

Reasons against: Where to begin?! It encourages irresponible breeding, which ripples out and hurts the world of responsible breeders/owners.

People who intentionally breed mutts (designer dogs/hybrids) do NOT properly test the dogs before breeding them. So you really don't have a clue about the health of the dog.

There is no pedigree so there is no way to trace the lineage which is so important...

Overall, I hate it for the same reason I do irresponsible breeders of "purebreds"-it hurts the pet population over all... not to mention, "hybrids" are just another way dogs aren't being adopted at shelters, subsequently being killed because somebody would rather pay $300 more for a so called "designer"/hybrid dog vs saving a life on death row for MUCH LESS cost.

EDIT: Just so you are clear, nobody EVER denies the overflow of "purebred" dogs in shelters. And these intentionally mixed bred, overpriced dogs (mutts) are partly to blame. Well, the people breeding them and BUYING them is to blame. If we did not have this evil "designer dog" industry going on in this country (and globally) then the kill shelters would not have the sad duty of killing MILLIONS of "designer" and purebred dogs each year.

If you want a "non shedding" dog, there are MULTIPLE AKC recognised breeds to fit that bill. And in some cases, go through a RESPONSIBLE (real) breeder for that breed. But NEVER answer ads in papers for "designer" dogs. Never buy at pet stores. We have to stop this madness of "designer dogs"...

EDIT: Last thing, not so important, but just to point out. When ever someone says something about their "morkie... maltipoo... labradoodle... etc" They are referring to the so called "breed" of their mutt (or as the BYBs refer to them as, their "designer dogs"). So called a spade a spade-it's a MUTT.

I don't think it's that people don't like them, they don't like the designer names that are tagged onto them. I have three yorkie/maltese dogs (one is almost 5, the other two are a year old, brothers) and I hate when people call them Morkies, Yorktese, or whatever other name they are called these days. They are mutts, mixed breeds, and I'm glad to say mine were not deliberately bred - they were accidents from a woman who raises champion yorkies and maltese and her house sitter wasn't watching them too closely!!!!! I love mine, they are great little dogs, but I don't like to see people deliberately breeding to get mixed breeds.

    I agree with everyone.

The problem with these "breeders" is that there's such a market for small trendy dogs. But these "breeders" often charge almost as much as a real breeder, who does a lot more to ensure the health and genetic line of the dog.

So people end up paying massive prices for dogs that could easily have major health problems in their near future.

But no one dislikes the poor dogs themselves - it's the scum who use them as cash cows, often dumping the poor mama when she's done with her service. It's sickening, imo.

  • 1 decade ago

Because millions of shelter dogs get euthanized every year because people prefer to spend hundreds to thousands on these "designer dogs" which are just as mutt as shelter dogs.

It's not the dog. All dogs are good and innocent; it is the irresponsible, selfish, superficial, and gullible owners who buy into the fad.

It's usually a money motive. People who breed and sell pure breeds don't like it because it cuts into their sales when other people buy crosses. Shelters and rescues don't like it because they loose business when people buy crosses from breeders rather than from them.

it's not that people don't like designer dogs. what people don't like is the fact that there are breeders out their who put 2 breeds together in order to make a "hybrid" and make a profit from it. they are mutts, but irresponsible back yard breeders label them "designer" and charge a lot for them. nothing's wrong with mutts, nobody dislikes any crossbreeds..we just don't like the people who put labels on these dogs and charge way too much.
