Have you ever invented your own strange recipe? Like a "food experiment"?

When I was a kid, I loved to come up with my own "food experiments." Ketchup and Wheaties, for example. Or syrup and yogurt with a few M&M's for taste.

Do you have any "unusual recipes" that you like to make?

I grew up poor, so one of my favorite snacks was mustard, and mayo sandwiches.

but as I got older, and married with children.

my wife worked the evening shift at the hospital, and I had to cook for the kids

needless to say that my wife and kids, had a lot of laughs at my cooking.

but eventually I did get better, and I developed a dish that to this day when i go to visit my son he ask me to make my chili pie.

Syrup and yogurt is a good mix especially if you make your own yogurt.

We like smoothies in the summer. I never use a recipe. I just pull out the blender and pour in a cup of yogurt. I start tossing in whatever fruit I have on hand. I sweeten with a little honey and thin it with a little milk if necessary. If you like icy smoothies, freeze some milk in an ice cube tray and drop in a few cubes.

I fried chicken with a crushed Ritz cracker coating when I realized I was out of flour. Now I use that coating deliberately on occasion. It's pretty good on breaded pork chops too. After I'd done this a couple of times, I found a recipe in an old cookbook. So, I guess it wasn't all that original.

Way back when I was in junior high school, my best friend and I fried up some breaded dill pickle slices and pickled beets. They were pretty terrible as I remember but neither of us would admit it at the time.

  • I like experimenting with food. Otherwise, new recipes would never be discovered. I was able to just toss a bunch of ingredients in a pot and made a super delicious soup. Everyone loves it when I make it that way. It's usually gone in 2 days.

At a lark I once put mustard on cantaloupe before. It was super spicy for some reason. I guess the sweetness of the melon brought out the inner spiciness of the mustard. It wasn't Dijon or anything...

I'm not much of a cook, and I don't really have the expertise to go inventing stuff. All I've done is stuff like onion powder in cheese biscuits, garlic powder in the tomato paste on pizza, soup using leftover baked potatos (the difference in taste between a baked potato and a boiled potato is immediately obvious even if they're in the same kind of soup, I recommend trying this just to experience the difference because it's actually rather interesting), and a tortilla with way too much sriracha sauce in it (I did this by accident, so it might not count). However, some of the people I know have tried weird things, in fact one of them has three 'rules of cooking' which he uses, including 'never follow a recipe'. Between some of the people I know, I've seen a lot of strange stuff, including a sort of round cakey thing with cinnamon and sugar on top (which was actually rather good if I recall correctly), a slab of ice cream covered in brightly colored candy chips that tasted like plastic, a dish of mashed potatoes and yams mixed together, chicken burgers with corn chips in them, and even a bowl of cheesies and chocolate truffles.

Well, whenever I'm really really hungry and there's nothing around the house to eat, I usually dump a can of pork & molassas beans into a bowl, stir in some salsa, shred a big pile of cheddar cheese on top, and then nuke it for a few minutes and garnish it with some sour cream. I like it once in a while, but It's not tasty enough that I'd have it every day. I also enjoy placing two pizza pops onto a plate, dousing them in RedHot sauce and zapping them for a ridonkulous amount of time (usually 6 minutes).

My mom came up with a "strange" recipe when I was just a little girl and she didn't know what to make with what was around the house.

It's about a cup of cool water, a sprinkle of corn starch to thicken and soy sauce to taste. Once it has been whisked together. You put a drained can of green (french style or regular) beans and a couple cut up weiners into a stirfry pan. Cook on medium until warmed (if you wanna do the weiners first to brown them, you can). Add the sauce until the whole meal looks like it's got a warm thick gravy. It looks and sounds disgusting but it tastes fabulous!!!

My mom also used to put ketchup on cottage cheese. Yet another dish she told me not to knock it until I tried it. (I love it now too!)

I have a recipe I've been making for years, which I call "Dog Food." All you do is combine a can of refried beans and a can of corn in a saucepan, stick it on the stove on medium heat for about five minutes (I suppose you could microwave it; I've never bothered to try) then dump in some Frank's Red Hot hot sauce, and if you have it, maybe a little sour cream, and voila. It's very yummy, if you're into that sort of thing, and a good, cheap, healthy dinner (it's even vegetarian!) but it does look like dog food....hence the name.

Will make a receipe according to directions first time, then my way.

Would call these experiments " Elephant Ears " until decided if a keeper or not.

String cheese dipped in melted chocolate and melon.

If I really want to settle in with a good book, just chunk up some cheese`s-like local handmade Italian,pieces/ curls of different dark chocolates, and then cantaloupe-honeydew thin slices -or sometimes mango or papaya chunks ..put a generous amount of Bruschette on the plate and there you go !

Well, not certain that I can beat "wheaties and ketchup" but my cousin and I used to spent most of our summers making up "recipes"....my aunt's only condition was that we had to eat whatever we made and sometimes that was a challenge....that being said...our actual favorite, that we both still eat, is raspberry jam and sweet pickle sandwiches. You also might want to know that I had my own cafe for many years....lol...scarey, huh?

Peanut butter and Jelly Salami sandwiches.

Peanut butter, jelly and Italian or Genoa salami on top. Pretty tasty. I have numerous recipes I have invented.. so to speak, in my kitchen the cook book are just a point of departure, really, I never stick with the recipes. But that's a strange one. I have converted some in my family to that sandwich.

Late Night or Morning hang over cure - I dip multi-grain bread in an egg mixture Put it into a preheated skillet that has a bit of olive oil on it Cook both sides Put a piece of processed cheese on it Lower the heat on the pan Cover with a pot lid and wait......... Cheese omelet on bread! Sprinkle some Lea & Perrins on it - and enjoy! Have with Perrier water and some lemon wedges in the water - you will feel so much better...
