The first step will be to gain Canadian permanent residency. You can do this by applying either from inside or outside Canada, but unless you have a temporary work or student visa, it's probably better to start the processs while you're still in the US.

You will have a much easier time of gaining permanent residency if you can show that you have a skill, certification, etc that Canada needs, such as being a doctor or a skilled construction worker (no, I'm serious).

This is going to sound messed up, but being married to a Canadian doesn't really give you very much leverage in the eyes of Immigration Canada. What is more important is that you prove that you won't be a burden on Canada's system, and that you have something to contribute to the economy and Canadian society.

You will still be an American citizen, since Canada is in America (America is a continent, he! )

I believe its a smart choice for you to take Canadian citizenship and not the contrary... Canada is like the US, with better conditions: social and economic !

You should marry him, then go to immigration, most probably you will have to return to USA for 6 to 12 months. If you happen to have a baby, things will get a lot faster, as Canadian authorities seems to take good consideration to kids being in an unified family.

I personaly have a friend from Canada, got maried to an Australian, and the whole process took 14 months. The pregnancy helped a lot, I believe.

    Good luck.

In order for you to become a Canadian citizen your boyfriend needs to sponsor you to become a permanent resident of Canada. Once living in Canada, for a certain amount of time, then you could apply for Canadian citizenship.

Despite the retards statements on this forum, Canada does not require ANY person to give up their citizenship. You can be a dual citizen of both the US and Canada.

You would begin your application with Citizenship and Immigration Canada:

    http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/ind...

You need to get married first, since Canada does not have a fiancee visa anymore.

To start with, you can't become a citizen unless you already have permanent residency status. There are four ways to legally remain in Canada. Temporary Residency. This is also know as a tourist visa. It does not permit you attend school, work, or look for work while in Canada. Americans don't require this to visit Canada for up to 180 days a year, so Citizenship and Immigration Canada will likely want to good reason why you are applying immediately after spending years in Canada under a study permit and why 180 days a year isn't sufficient for visiting. Being unemployed and not having strong ties to the US isn't going to look good. In any case you need background checks, medical exams (possibly), proof of long term travel medical insurance, proof of finances (bank accounts with tens of thousands of dollars), etc. They may be granted for up to two years, but it would be iffy that CIC would grant one. Processing times within Canada are 3-4 months. Study Permit. Apply to take further studies and extend your study permit. Work Permit. Leave Canada, find a skilled job offer from a Canadian company which has permission to hire foreign workers and then apply for a work permit. It is illegal to look for work in Canada under a study permit (unless you also have a study work permit) so don't try approaching companies while in Canada. Permanent Residency. Some how meet the requirements for one of the categories and apply for permanent residency. Either marry a Canadian, invest $800k in a Canadian company, obtain a skilled job offer and compete for one of 10,000 positions each year, get a province to nominate you (doctor willing to work in remote areas, top performing artist, Olympic athlete, etc.).

You would have to apply for Canadian citizenship and have lived at least three of the four years in Canada before applying for citizenship. You have to learn about Canada and know either English or French.

Basically, you have to live in Canda (legally) for a while before applying.

You would still retain your american citizenship if you only got married. If you would wish to become a canadian citizen, you would have to give up your american citizenship, and take the various tests for canadian citizenship. If your children are born in the US, they would become american citizens even though you hold canadian citizenship or even dual citizenship papers.

You apply for permanent residency at your boyfriend's address and then once you are married you will be up for citizenship. The process could take a while, but you will not be kicked out of the country as long as the two of you are married and you don't break any laws.

You don't have to unless you want to. They won't force you to move to Canada. Both Us and Canada allow dual citizenship. You can be a Canadamerican!
