How do I get Permanent Marker, black, out of a a polyurethane finished wood surface?

My wife was making posters, evidently the paper stock was thin enough to allow the maker to bleed through. Now one can read what she wrote on the polyurethane wood counter surface.

I had refinished the surface last summer and am hesitant to do the project again. We have tried alcohol and bleech neither has removed the letters, although the bleech seemed to cause the letters to fade a little.

Try using hairspray on a rag. Spray the rag and use one finger directly on the marker stain.

I agree with Sensible. Hair spray is wonderful for removing the ink from magic markers, etc. Just be careful and do a small area at a time so as not to dissolve the underlying finish.

Try a abrasive cleaner like comet..Also on clothing not sure if it would work on wood is to spray with hair spray them wipe with a paper towel keep doing this and it might lighten the marker writing..

Use a product called "Goof Off" it is designed to remove those marks. Most large stores carry it.
