no its illegal. its also illegal to ride a normal bike on the sidewalk but isnt really enforced because everyone does it

if by motorcross you mean a motorized bike - the answer is no.
There are municipalities (eg Seattle) where riding a BICYCLE on the sidewalk is legal but in many cases ill advised.
Ask your local police force - they're your best source of information. But if you've already gotten in trouble for doing it then you have your answer!
