Too much heartworm medicine?

My St. Bernard is 135 pounds. Would it be OK to give her two heartworm pills intended for 51 - 100 lb dogs? I'm told I should not cut them in half.

Thanks in advance.

Give her the 100 pd dose and then a dose for a 35 pd dog to make up the difference. The reason you shouldnt cut them is the medication is actually distributed thruout the little beef chew and you wouldnt know what size dose she had ingested and therefore risk over or under dosing her.

It will be ok. If you double the dose, you figure it's for dogs 102-200 lb.

Ideally, you would have the exact sizes needed on hand--one 51-100 and one 26-50, but heartworm preventive is pretty safe. What type are you using? My dog got ahold of 4X the amount of Heartgard he needed and was fine.

You are correct not to cut them in half. Unless there are "scored" lines on any medicine, there's no guarantee that all the medicine didn't get shoved into one half and not the other. Only when there's a line to actually break the tablet is it guaranteed to have an equal amount of medicine in all of the sections marked off by the lines.

    Hello

As a general rule of thumb it is hard to overdose for prevention. You can underdose though. That said, there is no need to make prevention expensive and I would suggest that you give your pet one 51-100lb tablet and one 24-50lb tablet.

I use a great prevention called Nuheart which is an exact heartgard generic and is very well priced.

    NO!! Bad Bad .

Ivermectin can cause Nerological problems when given in too high off a dosage . Seasures and even death. Make sure your Vet has given you the right amount. Even if you get a 100 lb pill and an pill for a Chihuahua sized dog 10-30 lbs , this one is not to be messed with .

You should try Revolution , it kills fleas/ticks and worms all in one drop on the neck . Good luck !

I work at a Vet Hospital and we recommend giving dogs over 100lbs 2 heartguard.Heartguard is very safe. Giving you dog 2 will not hurt him at all.
