Cigar Humidor Question:`?
i just got a humidor, and i know nothing about them. here's what i've done:
Calibrated the hygrometer
Wiped the inside with distilled water
Left a cup of distilled water in the humidor
Hygrometer now reads about 68
Now do i just fill the humidifier?
What about a sponge - do i need to leave a damp one in the box?
stupid question, but do i open the top on the humidifier to add the solution? once i fill it is it ready? how often will i need to check or refill the humidifier? use solution or distilled water? i barely even smoke cigars, and i got this as a gift. now i have maintenance to do.

Some people say to let the box sit empty for a few days to a week after it reaches the 65-75% mark, just to be sure the wood has absorbed enough moisture. I left the cup of water in for about 3 days after it reached 70% but then I couldn't stand it any more and loaded it up!
Btw, some experts are insistent that you don't wipe down the inside as it could cause warping of the spanish cedar.
Hope this and the other answers help. Enjoy!

When you say you calibrated the hygro - I'm assuming you used the salt test?
If the hygro reads 68 while empty, you've done a good job. You can go ahead and add your sticks.
Hard to say how you add the solution as I'm not sure what kind of humidifier you have. But the first time you should use cigar solution - fill it until its just damp, not saturated. Then you should use distilled water.
As far as how often you will need to check the humidifier, your hygrometer will tell you when its necessary to add distilled water.

Not sure about leaving a cup of water in there. They make humidification devices to keep the moisture in. So I would invest in one those right away. You shouldn't have to do this much work once you establish the right humidity! Hop this helps!
