Prejudice, bigotry, bad manners, lack of respect, all enter into it. And the anonymity seems to make people less inhibited about being offensive.

While it is certainly true that people often acquire better manners as they mature, I'd hesitate to ascribe the problem to age. There are certainly some very rude adults here who seem to be unable to disagree in a civil way.

Having been treated rudely by someone else, however, does not excuse or justify offensive behavior in return.

I really think that the anonymity of the internet has changed the socialization of the American people. That and our pop culture. "In your face" is so acceptable as a method of dealing with people.

And sadly, its not just the net. Look at the faces of people driving--you can see the rage on faces after some minor driving issue, like slowing to turn without a signal.

Probably it's based on the type of questions you ask. Unfortunately some ugliness is just part of the drill on R&S and it's best just to ignore those.

Then too, remember that what you read is not always written in the tone that you think it was, in other words, many times people write stuff that seems bad to you, but was not intended that way.

    Edit:

By the way, it is really silly to ask anything about your questions if you have them private, as this means we can't look at them and offer advice.

Cowards sometimes. The sort of people who would thump you in the back for the hell of it, then run away.

Some people get great satisfaction just out of being spiteful.

I`ve never really understood why tho.

Some people enjoy spending their time trying to upset people. But I will say that I believe that some of the atheists here are really trying to get some people to be logical which ain't really a bad thing.

I think it is young age, some try to be funny (and they are at times) some are just lashing out because of the hurt inside.

What do you think is an "ugly" response?

Anything that questions the existence of God?

You need to define (and possibly re-define) what you mean by ugly.

People are really brave when they have the disguise of anonymity. It gives them the courage to be as ugly as they want to be without the fear of reprisals.

A logical extension of the Golden Rule? Folks returning the same courtesies that they've been receiving perhaps?
