What muscle is involved in vertical jumping?

I do about 500 jump ropes every other day but at the end of the day it seems that the bottom of my feet feels sore the most. I heard that jump roping improves vertical ups but it just doesn't feel like it?

What other simple activities can improve such leap? (and also the question above)

id say calves are most involved for jumping

do calf raises either on a weight machine or simply by holding something heavy in your hands like a big textbook and going up and down on your toes repeatedly

or try doing basketball jumps with something heavy in your hands

also, jump on and off nonstop on something like bleachers or stairs, for as long as you can without stopping

wow, PLEASE don't listen to this dude saying just calves, thats total BS. look, when you jump you bend your knees right?? try it without bend sometime, its very tough and you wont get very high. when you bend your knees it is all QUADRICEPS, HAMSTRINGS, and GLUTES. the CALVES only help when you explode off the floor at the last moment, and when you push your heels off the ground.

jumping rope will help marginally cuz it gets calves (which aren't very important) and it works the Central Nervous System but not as much as plyometrics to get more explosive or hard weight training sor more strength
