Which is the worse US failure: The "War on Drugs" or the 'war' in Iraq?

I Posted this Q in the Politics section, but I'm thinking there are more politically astute people in the Seniors section.

But aren't both 'wars' totally political? Are we, the US, going to eliminate all dictators we don't like? Ya, let's start in N.Korea and see how much crap hits the Fan.

And if we oppose 'Drugs', shouldn't we outlaw the most dangerous; alcohol and tobacco? Gosh, didn't we try Prohibition in the 20's. And didn't that finance Al Capone and Joe Kennedy?

So what will it take to elect government officials who will follow the wishes of the average Voter, and not PAC, other lobbists and Big Business?

And is it too late to balance the budget and reduce the National Debt of $9.4 Trillion @ http://www.federalbudget.com/ ; .. ?

I'm thinking Rome fell, what, around 400 AD, because they over-extended their forces, poor leadership and financial problems. How close are we to that senario?

It's for sure the war on drugs, when are they going to learn, our prisons are full. Some nice guy get arrested for drugs and somehow winds up in jail, then when he comes out he really is a hoodlum. There is no rehabilitation in our prison systems. It only makes someone a worse person sending them to jail for drugs.Look at the money we waste on that. Also, pot is so popular, most of the time they are just writing tickets no for it.I say put the real hardcore guys in jail longer, especially for those that comit crimes with weapons.Look at your court docket,I bet they have 100 drug charges a day in our county and most the time they just say prayer for judgment, or let them off with a fine, well that's o.k., but why waste all that Court time on that to begin with, its costing the American public billions of dollars each year for that nonsense.Legalize marijuana and give harder time to the hard drugs or felony weapons charges. That's just my opinion.Have a good evening.Bless you all.

It is impossible to accurately answer a question that is so politically loaded and which assumes failure in both cases. Comparisons are impossible to make with any accuracy between two efforts that are being fought in completely different ways, but if you want to determine the levels of failure by the numbers of deaths of Americans, alone, the war on drugs has been the greater burden.

Just during the time of the Clinton administration, a recent 8 year period, over 100,000 Americans died because of drug-related deaths.

During the six years of the War in Iraq, 4000 Americans died.

I Think a case could be made that it is very difficult for the government to wage war against drugs because drug users are not the enemy of the people. They are the people.

I also think a case can also be made that the war in Iraq is meeting expectations, which is certainly not a definition of failure.

The war on drugs has willing victims, the war in Iraq does not. The government talks out of both sides of their mouth when saying tobacco is bad, yet they still pay subsidies to tobacco growers.

Reagan, Bush 1, and Bush 2 are responsible for over 70% of the $9.4 Trillion. That is not responsible leadership. As a citizenry we must stop blindly re-electing the same members of Congress over and over. They are the ones who are perpetuating our demise day after day. Until we elect people who care more about governing than increasing their personal wealth, we will find that the greatest nation ever built will not flourish.

The west, generally, don't seem to be any good lately at planning any type of wars....what happened to the planners who thought things out including the the long term consequences once the main armed conflict was over. We have wars on drugs, poverty etc...isn't it time we looked inwards and started looking after that vast percentage of the population in both the US and UK who aren't drug users, pay their bills and ask nothing from the state except to have the basic comforts in old age that either they, or their parents fought proper wars for?

The war in Iraq because of the horrendous loss of life. There will fewer volunteers. The US can't shove the philosophy of democracy down the throats of waring tribes. The war on drugs is a waste of taxpayer money and a world class joke.

Both of these are terrible failures. To many casual pot users in prison when the drug companies are pushing much worse drugs to us every night on the tube.

We should have never went into Iraq. Now we have wrecked the country, still have Bin Laden on the loose and have lost way to many of our own. Plus we are selling our soul to finance the mess.

Its hard to say which is worse. Both are a travesty.

It is hard to call what is going on in Iraq a war. It is more like an invasion. We shouldn't be there period. We should have been concentrating on Afghanistan. Which we rarely hear anything about.

I respect the men and women who are putting their lives on the line to serve this country and for those who have given their lives in service. I don't respect the people who sent them there.

It is a horrible disgrace that George Bush has been elected president for even one term much less two. He is an embarrassment.

If ''they'' would spend more time concentrating on stopping the hard drugs and leave marijuana alone more might be accomplished in that area.

    Maybe something will change soon.

The war on Iraq is really bad.

Many soldiers have died and The terrorists are actually gaining strength form out attack.

Also the fact the people sign up for war, but then sometimes get stoplossed (which means after there term is over they get sent back to Iraq).

Also all our many is being used on this war.

Due to this war, George W bush has gone from a surplus of money to the United states owing billions if not trillions of dollars.

Well, i see them as about equal in cost and resources (excluding the body count of course).

and I find them both ridiculous in their scope and goals... and both run, as you said, soley for political reasons.

Government is begining to fail although I suspect it will be MANY years before we see the collapse... but I also agree it is because government is too large and reaching out into toooo many areas where it JUST does NOT belong!

As for the first answerer - I did not know we had a war on poverty?? :) I thought that there was just a special cabinet in the senate or something thinking about it...

    Libertarian heart and soul!

The war on Drugs...Then the demise of the American family would not have happened and we would have kicked *** and been out of there by now!!! Instead we kill each other...are divided and unfocused not united.
