What is the religious justification for opposing abortion?

Abortion is nothing new, the ancients were doing it as well. Back in the days of the Old Testament, pagan worship of the Ammonites, Edomites and Moabites included a great number of sexual acts. Such activity led to quite a few births. To deal with these unwanted births, they turned to the god Molech.

The statue of Molech was fashioned out of bronze with its arms outstretched. They would then heat the arms of Molech until they glowed red. They would then cast the unwanted children into the arms of Molech as a child sacrifice.

This activity was expressly condemned by God in many places. Wicked kings such as Ahaz caused their sons to "pass through the fire".

Le 18:21 ‘And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

Le 20:2 “Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones."

The only difference between the above and what we do today is that we do not even allow the children to be born. Rather we burn them with saline and/or dismember them with vacuums while still in the womb. Late term abortion involves inserting a needle into the child's brain to pull out the content. All because of unwanted children due to unbridled passion. No, we are not talking the 1% due to rape or incest. We are talking about over 48,589,993 since Roe vs. Wade in 1973. And we consider ourselves "civilized" because we do it with sterile tools.

Well how about thow shall not kill (murder). Many Christian's believe it is human life at conception. Me personally ok I can buy that, but at the least, if it has a heart beat it is alive. How do we determin a person is dead? The heart beat has stopped. a baby on life support (it's mother) is alive if it has a heart beat. Plain an simple to me. I can see the arguement for it before a heart beat, but certainly not after.

clearly a baby in the womb plays, carries memorories over to birth and is in gradual development into what he or she is when born.. the prohibition against murder is based on man being made IN THE IMAGE OF GOD and that image is gradually formed not sharply appearing in a baby

True, abortions are certainly not just a part of recent history. I would even be willing to bet there have been women from many religious backgrounds (including Christians and those who aren't religious at all) who have been in such a position - not just the Pagan ones.

Killing someone who can defend him/herself is bad enough but terminating the life of a defenseless unborn child before it's even fully developed is unspeakably vile. I personally object on religious grounds but there are even some atheists that realize that it's wrong to take an unborn child's life so it's not strictly a religious concept.

God commanded that if someone caused injury to a woman and killed her or caused her to abort, he should be put to death.
