Nissan automatic won't accelerate from a stop and goes high RPMs when accelerating at any time. Why?

My 1993 Nissan Altima has never accelerated well. It usually hesitated for a second before going when I started from a stop. Just today, though it is accelerating horribly. If I start from a stop, I have to floor the accelerator, and even then it takes 15-20 seconds before it does anything. Then the RPMs go really high and it finally starts to move.

If I am already moving, sometimes it accelerates okay, but other times the RPMs get really high.

I checked the Automatic transmission fluid and it was a little low, but I refilled it and tried again and it was still accelerating dreadfully.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with my car? And anything else I could check on my own before having to take it in for service?

Thanks.

    Hello

this might sound like a long shot but my experiences with Nissan is that you need to look at the distributor if it has one. Nissan has always had problems where the the distributor goes bad. If your car does not have a distributor, then look into the coil packs. I don't know your situation but I doubt you could check that out yourself. Just keep it in the back of your head til you talk to your mechanic. Good Luck BS

sounds to me like the tranny filter is dirty, not letting it pump up fast enough. well, you could check the rest of the fluids,,like motor oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, anti-freeze, but dont take the radiator cap off when its hot, the anti-freeze will scald you. stuff like that, you can check.
