Monkey grass is really not a grass at all, but a member of the lily family also known as mondo grass or liriope. It spreads by runners underground & can be invasive if you don't dig it up & divide the plants every year, or plant them - container & all - to begin with so the runners can't spread.
I can almost guarantee that if you dig it up this year & think you got it all, you will still find some coming up next year because you will have missed some of the small runners. It will take a few years of digging it out each year before you will totally get rid of all of it.
Its not hard to dig up because the runners aren't rooted that far down. The best way is to push the end of your spade into the ground about 3" from the outside edge of the plant on an angle like this /, then step on the edge of the spade to be sure it goes underneath the plant. Do this on 3 sides of the plant, then on the 4th side, totally lift it out of the soil.
A lot of people like mondo grass, so if you pot it up I bet you could sell it.
