my 19 month old is so congested..what can i do?

i know that there is nothing to cure a cold.. but is there anything i can do besides using the nose sucker to remove mucus? when she sleeps she sounds so horrible.. and i feel so bad for her...she isn't running a fever.. but the mucus i do pull out has some greenish tint to it... so it isn't allergies.. plus she has a minor cough......any body have any suggestions? thanks in advance..

Update:

ok i love the hot shower idea.. BUT it totally makes my asthma flare up... will get the vaporizer out though!

Give her some decongestant medicine, use a cool air humidifier and sit in the bathroom with the hot shower running with her before bedtime. There is also baby vicks. If it is green she needs to see a doctor and get antibiotics since it sounds like it could be turning into an sinus infection.

If you don't have a humidifier .. go into the bathroom, turn the shower on HOT and close the bathroom door. Leave the water running for about 5 minutes. When the bathroom steams up .. take the baby into the bathroom to breathe the air.

The moisture in the air will serve as a decongestant. Kind of like a sauna.

After the mucus is broken up, take the aspirato (nose suction) and suction out the mucus.

    good luck! God bless!

turn up the shower really hot and shut the bathroom door. Sit in the steam with your little one for about 15 minutes. This will help a great deal. A vaporizer will do the same. Also 1/4 tsp of salt mixed with 8 ounces of water is the perfect saline solution. Put two drops in each nostril and wait about a minute. You will be amazed at what comes out...sorry mama...hope she feels better soon...oh yeah and popcicles make any toddler feel better....lol

Jennifer C may be on to something...my sis told me she put vick's on the bottom of her little one's feet and it really did help. I havent tried it though.

I also have asthma. I take a puff off of my inhaler before I go into a steamy room to prevent any problems

Green usually means sign of infection, so and the cough makes me wonder if it more than a innocent cold? push the liquids and what has worked to loosen things up is turn on a hot shower and close the door and the steam should help. I would call the doc in the morning if things aren't going better and they can recommend the right amounts and type of meds to take.

Ok let me preface this with saying I am not one for old wives's tales, however, my sister told me about this and it worked. I took vicks vapor rub and rubbed it into the bottom of my son's feet and put socks on him. I did this in addition to a humidifier and using little noses saline drops with an aspirator (booger sucker) and we got through it pretty quickly. Good Luck.

Just keep sucking it out with the mucus sucker.

Add a humidifier to the bedroom so it doesn't get hard and painful in the nose.

    Side note --

Albuterol is not indicated for a cough or runny nose.

When my 20 month old daughter had this same type of congestion I took her to the doctor and he gave us a nebulizer and a Rx for Albuterol. You give them "treatments" of it. It is just a mask that you put on so they breath in the medicine. It made my daughters coughing go away completely and broke up the mucus so it was easy to suck it all out with the nose sucker.

Maybe ask your doctor. That can really be beneficial.

Johnson & Johnson makes a vapor bath wash that works great If you bath her in a warm bath it should open up the nasal passages and soothe her aches to relax her so that she will sleep better . Also they make vicks plug-ins that will aid during sleep. Hope that this helps and that she is feeling better in no time :)
