Atheists: Do you encourage random acts of kindness?

I don't know which group started the "random acts of kindness" thing (perhaps someone can clue me in), but I personally have been doing this my entire life -- it's my way of giving support to others and showing affirmation and acceptance and compassion toward my fellow man.

What are your habits and your opinions on this subject?

Yes, I love doing random acts of kindness. I am fortunate enough to have been on the receiving end of a random act of kindness in my life and I know how grateful and touched I was. It's sad though, these days we tend to be suspicious of people who are really trying to show us kindness without expecting anything in return. It's hard for some folks to wrap their mind around that concept, even as the recipient.

  • Absolutely. For instance, I was shopping one day and as I reached for a package of chicken strips, a box of some other chicken product dropped to the floor. I rolled my eyes and said "oh, great", but right then a lady bent down, picked it up and handed it to me. It wasn't the grandest or most significant gesture in the world, but it was nice of her.

I'd seen her shopping a bit earlier. She was with another woman, and they were very affectionate. I'm fairly certain that they are a couple. So... I suppose this also goes to show that homosexuals aren't the snarling monsters they're often characterized to be by certain Christians.

Yes as often as I can, I will do random acts of kindness.

Recently I gave money and a hug to a badly disfigured man, gave an unfortunately poor job seeking old Muslim man a lift to Friday prayers...and whenever I am able I try to do something to help my fellow man or at least to raise a smile.

Life is OK, we might as well spread as much goodness about as we can eh ?

I'm careful only to give charity where it won't keep someone from learning to do for themselves. Much of what I do out of kindness is not judged that way, like trying to help the theists here, but I persist through the persecution.

I believe in treating every man and every woman as a "star," to use the Crowleyan phrase - that is, as an unique and self-sovereign point-of-view, the god-center of his or her own unique universe.

With that in mind, naturally I'm ready to assist people as I can; but I'm also absolutely respectful (or I make every effort to be) of their own right to conduct their affairs as they will, without undue interference from me, save as they interfere with my affairs.

Meh... usually... I am in a very bad place as of the other day so... I am trying to simply keep to myself a bit... but usually...

because it is good to be good to those around you, and even better to do the same without expectation of any return...

I go to the store for the old people on my block. I feed the homeless on the weekends. People are important, not made up deities.

So true that, I was going to say that I thought it was called living, not to appear to be concieted, I have, I confess, done my share of random acts of unkindness.
