Why is it?

Why is it that when "Pit Bull" is mentioned people automatically think of this vicious dog that wants to fight dogs and attack humans? Look at this video I made and see the side of a Pit Bull the media never shows.

People always do this to me. I will be walking him and he will start wagging his tail and they pet him, tell me what a great behaved and handsome dog he is. When they ask what breed he is and I say "he's a pitbull" they say "OHHHH" Then walk away, I can tell this makes my dog sad. He puts his tail down and whines while they walk away.

I think it is because a lot of dogs are mislabled as pit bulls and they are blamed for attacks. People don't know breeds (I once was asked if a bulldog/Beagle mix was a Cocker Spaniel. lol) The media helps support this idea as well since a pit bull attack sells papers and a Lab attack does not. An attack was once attributed to a pit bull and a whole page was printed on it. The family called the paper complaining it was not their pit bull puppy but their ferret. The next day the paper ran a few sentences about the mix up. How many people do you think saw the headline pit bull puppy knaws off childs toes and how many saw the tiny print for the mistake?

Pit bulls are just like any other dog if kept in a balanced state of mind. Remember that these are dogs first and breed second. If in a proper mental state, they are social with each other since dogs are social creatures.

I actually volunteer at a shelter with an 80% pit bull (and mix) population and the most of them are in no way aggressive. Some dislike other dogs, but most get along with them well (sometimes only opposite sex).

They are a wonderful type of dog and very devoted. Most just want human contact. It's horrible that we do this to them.

Did you know that in as little as 10 generations thousands of years of breeding can be overturned? This was discovered in a study in Russia using severely aggressive foxes that in ten generations were living as family pets (with kids no less). Reputable breeders NEVER breed an aggressive dog. The same goes for reputable pit bull breeders.

"Pit bulls are famous in circles of knowledgeable dog people, for the love and loyalty they bestow... on anyone who shows them a smidgen of kindness."

Thanks for sharing that. It's so sad how so many people think that pit bulls are ALL aggressive dogs, just because of what they've heard. Pit bulls can be the sweetest dogs ever. They can be aggressive, true. But every single dog has the potential to be aggressive. It's how they were raised that screws them up.

I wish people would just see that side of pit bulls that you showed...I just read another reply from a girl saying people walk away from her pit bull, just because it's a pit bull! That is absolutely ridiculous.

There are so many bad people...murderers, rapists etc...does that mean we're ALL bad people? Of course not! But for some reason, pit bulls have this horrible reputation because there are so many violent pit bulls (thanks to irresponsible idiots who think watching dogs rip each other apart is fun)

    It makes me furious, really.

When I think of pit bulls, I just think of another dog.

    Honestly.

It's just another type of dog used in the wrong way-unfortunately, it gets the most media from it, and seems to be abused the most. I've met tons of wonderful pit bulls, enough for me to think of it as just another breed of dog. It is because of people that people automatically think of a vicious dog that wants to fight dogs and attack humans.

Sure, it upsets me much when people stereotype the breed-but it upsets me when anyone stereotypes ANY breed.

That is just the truth(the video). It was really good too. People do think of them as mean but really it is their owners that make them mean. They should be the ones that something gets done about, not the Pits.

I understand that not all pit bulls are aggressive, some could be the sweetest dogs in the world, but pit bulls are just naturally agressive dogs, so that is what people think of when they hear "pit bull". It is instinct for them, but not all of them are like that. I am sorry that people say this about your dog!

Even though all dogs can/will bite the Pitt Bull does major damage. Its the way their jaw is shaped. We have one next door that is friendly as all heck but that doesn't mean it wouldn't turn on me in a heartbeat.

They aren't consistent, they are just fine for years and then they can turn & kill a dog, a baby, a child or their own owner.

pitbull - people think oh thats what attacked those people

because most people don't know dogs and only what is shown to them.

the media shows only bad because thats what sells

i've know plenty of vicious cocker spanials but they never make the news and thats what parents get for their kids

    crazy world isn't it?

well they were trained as fighting dogs so when you say it everyone says they are very aggressive because it is in their blood. even though some might not act that way they arent all aggressive the only ones that are ... are the ones trained to be.
