The easiest way to get acute accents is by pressing the Alt Gr key (right of the space bar) and then the letter...
é, í, ú etc.
Other accents can be got by pressing the Alt key (left of space bar) and typing in the code on the RIGHT hand numbers keyboard...
à = alt + 133
ê = alt + 136
è = alt + 138
ô = alt + 147.
ç = alt + 135
â = alt + 0226
ã = alt + 0227
ñ = alt + 0241
ö = alt + 148
ü = alt + 0252.
Bon chance.

In Word click on insert then symbol which gives a grid of characters click on the one you want and then on insert
Alternatively use Character Map on my XP this is in the system tools folder (START/ALL PROGRAMMES/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/CHARACTER MAP
This shows a similar grid for you to select copy and then paste into your document (or email) but you have to clear the last item before selecting a new one.
You can type in the ASCII code for the symbol directly. The character map gives you the codes but you have to use the numeric key pad not the main number keys - on a laptop this is a bind.
Also you can set up the language spell checks in Word which will deal with most but not all of them for you as spelling mistake corrections

To open Character Map, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Character Map.
When you have highlighted a character, the Character map screen will also show you a shortcut on the lower right side such as Alt+0234 for ê.

For French, I memorised some alt codes. (The most commonly used French symbols are all in the ALT+130s).
e.g ALT+
133=à
135=ç
138=è
130=é
etc. :-P
