How can I keep rattlesnakes out of my yard?

Update:

The yard is gravel, my pets are my concern. I'm looking for an alternative to shooting them!

Please do not use moth balls in your yard - the chemicals are highly toxic and can poison your environment.

Also, please do not allow your cats to roam outside - in addition to the fact that rattlesnakes have been known to bite cats (and a cat will die from a rattlesnake bite), free-roaming cats devistate the environment, killing many birds and beneficial animals, and even endangered species. Please keep your cats (if you have any) indoors at all times.

Here is a website that discusses ways of keeping snakes (of all types) out of your yard, legally and without the use of chemicals: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/livingwith_wildlife/sna...

I have a couple options for you: 1. go to the pet store and purchase a dozen rats each week to release in your neighbor's yards-- of course, this could be costly and will probably keep Monster and Angel away as well. 2. This one's good and I don't see how it couldn't work-- build a barricade of Harley mines around your yard, this will help to keep your cats at home and rattlesnakes out of your yard!

There was an article in Copeia a few decades back. It showed that the best repellant for rattlers was the scent of humans. You can also remove any cover that the rattlesnakes might utilize and eliminate any rodents that might attract them.

Keep cats. Cats and snakes do not get along. They might not keep them all out but they can alert you to their presence.
