Can a baby born after a 29 week gestation period weigh seven lbs. five ounces at birth.?
I'm in the military and was overseas. When I returned my girlfriend and I resumed our relationship. We then had a beautuful baby. However he was premature. I didn't question it because he was very sick when born, and was in the hospital for about a month after birth. Just like a premature baby would be. However, The more I think about it the more I wonder. If we conceived him the day I got back from Iraq he would have had a twenty nine week gestation period. He weighted seven lbs five ounces at birth. If I ask for a paternity test and I am the father, it will ruin a great relationship. So if I do get one done, I need to have a very good reason. Is this information alone enough for suspicion?

Yes, it is possible. My friend is pregnant with her first baby and has gestational diabetes. (Babies of moms who have Gestational Diabetes tend to have larger babies) When she went in for her 30 week ultrasound, they estimated the babies weight to be 7 lbs. 15 oz. She is now at 36 weeks and the baby is 10lb. 5 oz.
So, it is possible.

Remember gestation is measured from the first day of your partners last period so if he was born 29 weeks after you came home he actually would have been around 32 weeks.
He was a big boy for being born so early but presumably had problems linked to his prematurity?
I would leave well alone unless you have strong suspicions that he is not yours - ie. looks nothing like you and there was no real indication that he was that early.

Personally if you love the child and the women why risk it. Usually doctors will tell you the gestation of the baby when its born. If the doc was saying he was premature then he was. Weight isnt the best predicter but things like breathing, sucking relfex and other reflex development are way better indicators.

Are you sure you have your dates right. What date did you go overseas? What date did you come back? What date was your son born?
Is it possible she could have got pregnant before you went away and not realise it does happen.
I would check and recheck dates before if I was you before I asked for a paternity test. Have you any other suspicions? What about when you were away - any reason to be suspicious, any rumours (not that rumours are anything other than just rumour with no truth normally) that may make you think she had an affair.

Well dr.s count it from the last period so he was really probably born about 31 or 32 weeks and there are some really big babies so it could be right but if u really really have doubts and its bothering u that much u should get one so u can have a piece of mind

The medical records should give the gestational age. Mine show my son was born at 39+ 4.

She could have gotten pregnant earlier than she realized.
Some women can even have their 'regular' period for the first 2-3 months of pregnancy (it's rare -- but can happen!) ...
He might not have been born as *early* as suspected. He might have been closer to full term.
I was born premature .. and weighed 4 lbs. 12 oz.
Source(s): I think you are most likely the father. She could have just had her conception date wrong. BUT if you are doubting that the child is yours -- I think you're going to continue doubting it until you get *proof* he's yours. By all means -- take the Paternity test. Just tell her that you had to do it to put the baby on your Military Insurance .. (and so the baby is your known decendant if something were to happen to you overseas. He would be entitled to benefits.) - 1 decade ago
a 29 weeker would be a premie, but would not weigh that much unless his birthweight was gonna be 10-12 pounds, YOU need the paternity test for medical reasons, if you accept the baby that is fine, but now is the time, because although you say the relationship is great, that is subject to change and you need to know exactly where you stand! Good luck, if you want to raise the baby and he is not yours like I said KUDOS to you, the little fellow doesn't know, but you guys need to for medical reasons!

my first baby born at 41 weeks weighed 9lbs 5oz
my second born at 38 weeks weighed 6lbs 4 oz
7lbs is a lot to weigh in at 29 weeks...
