Wasn't Phil Hughes supposed to bring the Yanks back to contention?

At the beginning of the year Yankee fans were all excited about how Hughes and Jobba were going to revamp the Yanks rotation and how those two would bring them back into contention. I know Sunday was only one game, but I didn't see anything spectacular about this kid. It seems to me that he'll need another few years of development.

Any thoughts?

Also, do you think the Yankees stand a chance to win the World Series with their current rotation? And please no "Yankees suck" or "Red Sox suck" chatter.

Update:

You're right, I guess contention wasn't the right word. I just think their starting rotation is suspect and even though they've pulled together some great starts. (Wang isn't a 30 win guy, like he's currently pitching, and I think he'll flame out.)

He's got talent, no question about it. He displayed talent and posted a winning record last year too. The truth is he should be in AAA but the Yankees pitching is not deep so they need him and they will let him develop on the Major league level.

Let's not forget how fast he went through the minor league system. It will take some time. He is the pitcher of the future for the Yankees.

    ***Edit, Ralph**

Seriously. The last time the Yankees were not in contention was 1992!

Philippe Hughes Is in his first year In the big league. He made 13 starts last year so, many fans expect alto from him, remember he's still like a rookie !! Maybe he can end up being a very effective major laaguer but give him a chance to learn more to be that allusive Pitcher. Maybe It will take few years after all? It's a Question If this rotation can get them to the Series

Sox fan here but lay off the kid. I watched the whole unbearable game yesterday. The weather was a nightmare to pitch in. Cold, windy, and raw. The kid has skill (nasty over the top curveball). It's early April and pitching in crappy weather won't help. See what happens when weather gets better. This Yankees rotation won't win them a World Series.

93-94 MPH Fastball and A "plus" breaking ball is what makes him special. He has shown his talent in his start against the Jays and Last year with his near No-Hitter against the Rangers. He's young, it's cold, Fenways really tough, there are alot of reasons why he could be struggling, but I do expect him to turn it around.

Our offense is the reason we have been losing, our pitching (while not outstanding) has been fairly good.

Ralph- Last night it was 91-94.... He just couldn't control it. Against the Royals on the other hand, yes, his velocity was down.

his fast ball has been 87-88 NOT 93-94.(probably his biggest problem)..he is a tweener right now a AAAA pitcher better than AAA but not ready for MLB..they will send him down for a month or 2 then he will be back for good...heres a Question for the person that asked this Question....when's the last time the Yanks WERE NOT in contention ..1995-96?

I have more faith in Hughes then kennedy.I think Huges will be fine he just needs some time he'll bounce back.I'm more upset over the fact that my yankees are not scoring runs.they need to start hitting.Dicek was all over the place last night.
