Odd gift??? I can hear subtle difference in accents?

All my life I have been able to pick out very subtle differences.

It is more then just saying someone is british or saying someone is from the south.

I can hear a the distinct difference between someone from (example) Texas, Georgia, even the low country in the southeast.

I can hear the differences between a welsh and english accent.

Ok....now you guys WILL think I am crazy....

I describe how I hear things...for example

To describe the accent of someone who grew up in Georgia. I would say "their vowels sound very round"

To describe someone from the low country I would say,

"Their words spill over. Overflowing into eachother"

The other thing I have noticed is that if I spend enough time with someone I will begin to pick up their speech patterns, even imitate the accent. This usually happens very slowly and I am unaware of it. As I got older when I have seen it happen I have tried to "stop" it...but it still seems to happen.

Update:

Mama-

The reason I am asking this question is because tonight @ a trade show for work I sat by 3 woman from Arkansas. I could hear a difference between the woman closest to me. I casually asked her if she always lived in Arkansas. She said she grew up in the midwest, but moved to Arkansas 34 yrs ago.

I could hear small bits of the accent in her speech but I knew right away she wasn't a native to Arkansas.

You do indeed seem to have a gift! : )

Depending on your interests and your present occupation, you could perhaps put it to part-time use in some way as in voice-coaching for the movies? Or even with the police or FBI to help identify suspects?

In any case, I hope that your enjoy your 'ear'!

There was a man once that came up to our family and told my father in law that he heard a Southeast Kansas accent from him and he told the rest of us that we were from Southern California. He also told me that my parents were not native English speakers and to my mother-in-law that her parents were from Oklahoma. It freaked us out, he was right on all accounts.. He said he was a linguist and could detect almost every accent, even the slight accents we picked up from our parents. Amazing...so now what are you going to do with this gift?

Wow. Why would you" try and stop it." You could become a voice coach! My husband has a gift for recognizing voices, he can hear the most subtle differeces. He can listen to any character and tell you who the actor is, he doesn't have to look. Whenever their is an actor in a show I ask him, "who is that? They sound familiar. And he instantly knows.
