What would happen if government decided to ban pornography ?

What Human Rights argument/s would be used to justify that ?

Update:

Thanks for your answers - I apppreciate your thoughts on the topic.

Some of you are saying that it's already illegal state to state - what dya mean? I thought everyone had access via the internet ?

Although I don't agree with these arguements, I suppose the government would use the arguements that pornography causes exploitation, rape, child molestation, slavery, sexual abuse...the list goes on and on. To say that pornography causes these abuses is like saying video games cause assault and homicide. You may be attracted to these ideas, but you don't have to act on it.

Personally, I don't like pornography; but I feel that a ban would criminalize an already shady industry; thus causing more exploitation and abuse. It is a necessary evil.

No human rights arguments would be relevant to this issue. The only way that pornography could be partially banned in the United States, would be based on redefining 'obscenity'.

Some states, cities or localities ban the mailing of adult materials into those areas.

There would be First Amendment arguments made, and those arguments would win.

However, if they did "ban" porn, it would just go underground on the black market, like everything else does.

And, in these days of the Internet, there's no way they could enforce such a ban.

There is no way of enforcing it and thus, not worth enforcing in the long run.

Do you want the police to divert resources away from catching real criminals: murderers, rapists, robbers, etc. to chase after people looking at pornography?

wow wizjp is waaay off on this - s/he usually does so much better.

the us congress and/or executive branch has tried to ban pornography numerous times, it has always been immediately struck down by the judicial branch as a first amendment violation and has never been implemented.

Pornography is pretty much illegal already. State by state.

Would only make it more expensive. Look at how well the alcohol ban worked.

The same thing that happened with drugs there will be a large underground black market that causes crime and more abuse.

That would be a violation of the first amendment, free press & free speech.
