Snake a toilet - can I go down through the toilet, or must I remove it and go directly down the drain?
Upstairs bathroom toilet is sluggish. It flushes very slowly and gurgles when it reaches 'empty'. The slow empty and fill is drawing water out of the nearby bathtub P-trap, allowing sewer smell to back up into the house.
One plumber suggested that it was a vent clog -- but re-routing the venting and snaking the roof stack didn't resolve the issue.
Another handyman suggested that the wax seal/ ring has an air leak, that doesn't let water out, but lets air in somewhere. I'd like to try snaking the drain before I pull the toilet (its HEAVY!).
I have a hand-auger, not one on a drill. I know the drill-mounted one could tear up the porcelin, but don't know the risk with the hand-auger.

The snake for the toilet is called closet auger.....The cable is 1/2" x3' it will only be good if the clog is in the toilet itself......The way you explain it, sounds like you have a clog between the first and second floor. Cause if it comes back up in the tub then you usually have a clog. If that is the case then you can rent a snake at your local equipment rental for about $60 a day, a half a day will cost about $40.....They have different heads for the snake, so ask which is for what, and they will show you how to use it also......
You will have to see if there is a clean-out on the second floor if not then you will have to pull the toilet to snake it out. As others have said don't forget the wax seal.......
The plumber got you if he rerouted the vent pipe....Cause that's not the problem........
Good Luck.......

There are toilet augers specifically designed for that purpose, ie they have will not scratch the pocelin but they typically only go a little past the flange(where the toilet meets the floor). A regular hand snake will also work just be sure to take it easy so the bowl doesn't get scratched.
If that doesn't work, you would have to pull the toilet and replace the wax ring.
As a plumber there were times when we had to remove a toilet and use a large power auger. At that point you would want to run the auger down far enough to reach the clean-out in the basement(a screw cap in the drain line) if you have one and can find it, then repeat the process from that point down. That part is better left to a plumber since they have the equipment and it can get real messy.
As a side not I would have suspected the vent first also.
Hope this helps and good luck. Plumbing is no fun.

This is the closet auger made for the job.
Fully extend the handle to draw the head into the cover.
Place the head into the toilet trap, as deep as it will go.
Begin cranking as you fully extend the cable.
Crank long and hard, there should be no resistance.
Remove the overflow cover on your tub waste and auger in the same manner.
If you still have a problem call a good plumber.

With a hand auger, its best you take the toilet off. When you do this, you will need a new wax seal. Its much easier to run your auger through the toilet and drain when they are both seperated.

The plumber who stated it was a vent problem was probably correct. It also sounds like your tub is not vented properly. Even though you are using a hand auger, it is metal and can scratch the porcelin.
