Legal age for child to leave home?
My 15 year old does not get along with the mother or me. The child is living with the grandparents right now. What is the legal age for a child to choose where they live? I live in Georgia.

I was told it was the age of 14. As long as you and the mother agree, along with the grandparents, it's legal for your 15 year old to live with them. If you feel better, you could go to court and give them temporary custody, in case they have to take the child/teen to the doctors. Or, just write up a power of attorney, that way the grandparents can make all the decisions for the juvenile. Good for you for allowing your daughter to live with her grandparents, if you feel she would be happier there, you are unselfish parents.

In Missouri, a child that leaves home at a minumum age of 17, cannot be forced to move back home - although his/her parents are still legally responsible for them until they are 18. Children younger than that are still under the control of their parents, unless the parents relinquish their rights, or have their rights taken away (this can be temporary or permanent). At that time, someone else would assume responsibility of them.
I cannot say for sure if this is also the case in Georgia. You could certainly call the local juvenile office for guidance.
If this arrangement is satisfactory to all parties, you can either grant the grandparents guardianship, or give them a power-of-attorney over the minor child. You should have these papers drawn up by an attorney - that way all the legal issues will be addressed.

In law there are two ages considered....Age of Emancipation (Majority) and Age of Consent.
The emancipation age is essentially that age where the juvenile is self dependant and requires no outside assistance to live their life.
Age of Consent is that age the court feels a minor is able to make decisions concerning their sexual activities.
Your case is more along a civil issue of custody. If the parents BOTH agree in letting the child reside with the grandparent...and the grandparent has no objection...the court would consider the minors "application" to reside with the grandparents.
Without going to court it is an issue strictly between the parents and grandparents.
