How can I recover info on my hard drive when the computer is dead?

My HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop is dead (again). It's the motherboard (again) and I'm about to send it to HP to be fixed (again). I have some files on the hard drive that I really need. HP probably won't wipe the hard drive, they didn't last time, but you never know. There's nothing wrong with the hard drive - is there any way I can get the data off of it? One of my students told me there's a contraption you can buy that turns an internal hard drive into an external hard drive, or some such. Does such a thing exist?

(Yeah, I know I should have backed up my data. But I didn't.)

You need a 2.5" USB2.0 / Fireiwre Combo Hard Drive Enclosure kit. It's less than $20.00 over internet. You do need to find somebody who can take the HDD out from laptop and put in for you( a lot of people can do that).

The link is one of the kit.

If the drive has a mechanical failure, you'll need a specialist such as OnTrack data recovery. If anything else failed, your data will remain safe and untouched. You can either plug the drive into a similar device, or purchase a drive caddy.

you could temporarily put the hard drive in a friends laptop and take the data from the hard drive and put it on a flash drive

properly, once thechronic clicks, this is especially a lot useless for good. (till you callchronic savers...). try putting it in a resealable plastic bag (to circumvent condensation) and positioned it in the freezer in one day. instantly positioned it on your enclosure and bypass as many archives as a chance. once you've get admission to to liquid nitrogen, you are able to pour small quantities over the hardchronic (make certain it would not bypass interior!). This will strengthen the gap between the right and platters, making it easier to examine (and probably recuperate) documents.

if you find someone who could do this- you could hook up your hard drive as a slave on a different machine and get your data off easy :)
