just exactly how do they conclude a gal. of gas produces 20+ lbs. of co2?

drjackson? thanks for the science, but could you put that in laymens terms, I can't get my brain to equate 6.7 lbs. of liquid gasoline producing 18lbs of co2!!! Does it have something to do with the conversion of molecules or the adherence of them to others? Hate t sound like an idiot but I really just want to understand this. Any more help would be appreciated.

    Gas is approximately C8H18. A gallon of gasoline has a mass of 2790 g (6.15 lbs), which is 24.3 moles of C8H18. That 24.3 moles produces 8x as many moles of CO2, i.e. 194 moles, or 8538 g. Converting 8538 g to pounds gives 18.8 lbs. You get to 20+ pounds when you add in the CO2 generated in making and transporting the gasoline.
