For Christians who actively oppose the Catholic Church ...? (see details)?

Here's the scenario for you:

Imagine for a moment that after a Billy Graham Crusade, a group of Catholics gathers to confront exiting attendees with signs and loudspeakers. "Once saved, always saved isn't Biblical!" "Your pastor has lied to you!" "Come home to the true Church!" Some are handing out tracts, others rosaries. How would you react?

In fact, people exiting the papal Mass at Nationals Stadium yesterday encountered a rather loud group of anti-Catholic protesters with signs (and shouts) of "Catholics are not Christian!", "Catholics are going to Hell!", "Your priests have lied to you!", and handing out "whore of babylon" tracts.

Protesting the Pope on the basis of the priest scandals, which still anger many people, is at least understandable. But this was as if an anti-Catholic delegation from R&S showed up to spout their "love" for Catholics in real life.

What do you think of this behavior? Would you have done this, given the opportunity? If so, why?

Update:

Sis Blue -- yes, I believe Westboro was present, but they had company.

Callen -- Awesome. Amen.

Update 2:

Aleria -- no, I wasn't there, but it was your mom's comments about it that prompted this question!

no, I wouldn't have. I have my own beliefs, but I don't need to be in anyone else's face about them. I worked in a nursing home before, and there were 2 roommates I cared for, both Catholic men with MS... and in the evenings when I got them ready for bed the mass would come on tv, and all three of us would be praying the Lord's Prayer as we went through the evening routine... I know those men had every bit as much desire to find God's will as I do as a protestant... whatever the differences are... I think people would do well to remember "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself." I think that's closer to the Christian ideal than standing outside a stadium screaming at people.

The doctrine of "once saved, always saved" was invented by John Calvin during the Reformation. Under this theory, the Protestant believes that one is saved when he accepts Jesus as personal Lord and Savior. This is comforting - after all, who wouldn't want assurance? According to this view, true Christians are the ones who will persevere to the end. For those who accepted Christ during their lives but did not persevere to the end, the doctrine calls these people superficial Christians. So true Christians will go to heaven and superficial Christians will not. Not only is this teaching not Scriptural, it is difficult to accept the teaching on reason.

The only distinction between a true Christian and a superficial Christian is that the superficial Christian did not persevere to the end. Otherwise, the two types of Christians appear to be the same. The superficial Christian has all the earmarks of a true Christian except that he did not persevere. But this necessarily means that the true Christian cannot know that he really is a true Christian either until the end of his life. He, too, won't know whether his conversion was genuine until the end of his life. Therefore, despite all the talk about assurance, he cannot be sure.

This doctrine, therefore, actually gives its adherents less assurance of their salvation. It necessarily imposes upon them uncertainty until the end. The Catholic (and Scriptural) view, however, does give assurance to the believer that he is in fact currently saved (a true Christian), and that, if he perseveres to the end, he will be saved at death. We also know that God will give all the graces necessary for us to be faithful to the end (because of our freewill, the question is always whether we will accept the grace or not). Thus, Catholics know that it is theirs to lose. Protestant Calvinists don't even know whether it is theirs to begin with.

  • Were you there?

My mother (Misty 0408) and I were there as well!

The Mass was amazing and how anyone could hate our cute little Pope is just...astounding! He just glowed through the entire Mass and it was a wonderful experience to be there.

They said 150,000 tickets were requested and only 46,000 were given out.

But we didn't like the fact that we got herded out--as they wouldn't let you out any other exit--right into a protesting crowd shouting nonsense such as those.

The walk back to the metro was full of people handing out tracts and shouting with loudspeakers about worshipping Mary and saints, about priests raping little boys and other things. It was certainly uncalled for.

Of course, if you had the chance to pick up any of the tracts, they were quite entertaining and eye opening to what some Anti-Catholic sects think of us and why.

All we can do is pray for them.

They're little more than ignorant, hateful scum. They ignore everything the Bible teaches about how to behave and regard other Christians, and they get around that by convincing themselves that "Catholics aren't Christian"--which is ludicrous, because if you invalidate the Church from which your own denomination came, you invalidate your own denomination and everything you're saying in one fell swoop. They're hypocrites. Nothing about that kind of behavior can be construed as respectful, much less "Christ-like". That's why you don't see Catholics making asses of themselves outside of Billy Graham crusades or Promise Maker meetings or evangelical youth rallies or whatever. And if they're handing out Chick tracts... well, then they're just lower than low. Those things are a joke--they're blatantly meant to be offensive, and the only people who find them "inspirational" are the people whose narrow views are supported by that rubbish.

Most decent people--Catholic or not--respect the pope and appreciate the steps he's taken to try to resolve this sex abuse problem in the U.S. Most decent people also realize that most priests aren't pedophiles, and that there are plenty of pedophiles out there hiding in all kinds of religions, professions, and walks of life.

Whether on the internet or in real life, trolls have a hard time not making themselves known and disgusting everyone else around them. The people you're referring to are trolls, and it should be obvious which answerers to this question, thus far, are trolls. In either case, none should be paid any attention to. If they're not willing to act like adults and check their own hypocrisy at the door, they're not worth anyone's time.

i'm Catholic and that i've got on no account heard of any, purely those people who hate on a case via case foundation. CJ (AKA Chris) is a suitable occasion of someone who particularly of residing for Christ and His word, expects Christ to conform to his very own ideals, that's the reason he's erroneous, and for his sake enable's pray he stops spewing hatred in the direction of Christ's Church and accepts all his brothers and sisters in Christ. Christ's Church substitute into ordinary formerly the NT substitute into written, no longer any incorrect way around, so i think of that in case you have faith purely interior the bible then you certainly're a bible worshiper. Merry Christmas !

    Understanding you anger.

Protests happen all the time at Crusades, usually not by Catholics, but by others.

I wonder - I know the Westboro Baptist Church protest outside Catholic Churches (a friend of mine lives accross the street from a Catholic church in Topeka and has had to hear their ugliness for years)

    Were they there?

    Hello,

Well these sorts of people are just hanging themselves.

As they start seeing family and friends gradually dying off over the years and no rapture has been fufilled they'll eventually have their rude awakening. Even worse, when they cross over and are asked did you feed me when I was hungry, cloth me when I was naked, (for anti - Mexicans) did you welcome me as a stranger into your home etc, only then will they come to know the truth. I hope for their sake that Jesus does not have the secular attitiude that ignorance of the law is no excuse.

That said, my main objection to their protest is just the bad manners which are appalling by any religious or cultural standards.

    Cheers,

    Michael Kelly.

    Is it something like this?

Go get a copy of the marine corp manual, take it home study it. Don't forget to rip out the five chapters that contradict what you are doing. Get other people together to study it, implement it in your life, get the people who you study it with to implement it in there lives. Oh, don’t forget to get your official marine corps concordance, so you can look up words and phrases like “simper fi”, Iwo Jima, Helmet, Grenade, and Honor, etc. Now does this make you guys marines -- no. You are missing pretty much everything that it means to be a marine. you haven't had the training that they have done for years you don't have the history -- the understanding of what it means to be a marine, you don't have the traditons -- the rituals that they have been doing for years. Nor do you have the true meaning of what the manual says. Because outside of the marine corp, the manual is MEANINGLESS.

People who belong to bible studying fellowships who believe in the doctrine of solely scripture scripture first scripture only sola scriptura are no more Christians than are the people who got together to study the marine manual are marines.

Now that you and your friends have studied the marine corp manual. Go out in front of a marine corp recuting station and as people walk in hand them a tract from the manual and get them to come join you. Go to a marine corp camp and do the same thing see if they will join you marine corp manual studying fellowship. But don't call yourselves that. Call yourselves, "marines". Go to the verterns day parade and hand out tracts from the manul there, and tell them to come to your marine barracks. Let people know that you have the way that all they have to do is study the manual with you and they too can be marines.

Then just like you've done with us with this question. Go up to a real marine tell them what you are doing, and ask them what is wrong with it?

As the bible says you know them by their fruits. Sounds as if the anti catholics have much hate in them which is not a good fruit. How can they say they are Christians when they fail to love their neighbor?

  • 1 decade ago

I think it is driven from fear. Perhaps if these poor souls can convince others that the Catholic church is wrong, they won't feel so bad about themselves preaching against the word of God.

Look at what they have to ignore to believe that Catholicism is not Biblical:

    This is my body.

    This is my blood.

    My flesh is real food.

    Feed my sheep. (works)

    Faith without works is dead.

Upon this rock I build my church.

Confess your sins one to another.

Whosoever's sins you forgive, they are forgiven.

Hold fast to that which was given to you by letter or tradition.

They also have to believe that Sola Scriptura is Biblical, in the face of Paul who said to hold fast to tradition. They have to believe that God really wanted them to toss out books of the Bible that were part of Christianity for over 1000 years. They have to accept that Martin Luther was led by God, even though he also wanted to get rid of even more of the Bible, such as the book of James.

In the face of all this, it only stands to reason that they need to remain angry and convinced that they are right. To actually look at the evidence might destroy them.

It's also the main way for Chick Publications to remain profitable.
